I've just been reading this review. It links to the trailer of the film.

Ir was filmed in Morocco.

I'm enjoying watching The Chosen too much. I think the depiction there of Mary's relationship with Jesus is just so sensitively handled, and so moving. Even if the reviews were good of Mary, I don't think that I could cope with both at the same time . . .

I'm not Christian and have no idea how biblically accurate it is, but I do like 'The Nativity Story'. It's on Youtube.

Mike Winger is a Bible teacher I regard very highly. He did review of it on YouTube

Thank you. I have not seen it but it was on my radar … like most Hollywood depictions, I’m sure it will be a ‘nice’ film but right from the outset, looking at the trailer, it is not an accurate depiction and contains extra-Biblical ‘feel-good stuff’. We know about the strict warnings in the Bible about adding to, or taking away from Scripture.

I may watch, but for seasonal entertainment, only … and to pick apart inaccuraccy 🤪

The trailer itself is enough to put me off, to be honest.

I can’t abide depictions which deviate from or add to scripture, no matter how beautifully filmed etc.

Yes, I get you @AgileGreenSeal 💐. I hate inaccuraccy being depicted as truth, and because of that I am grateful for the link you gave us. I am watching other videos of Mike Winger and may God bless him for speaking truth. I am certain the film will provoke ‘debate’ as we know how much the enemy likes to sow confusion and to give those who knowingly, or unknowingly, a further chance to do his work.

I'm not so bothered about interpretations per se of scripture - after all, we all do that in our heads, from our selections and translations of the original Greek text onward - but I have to say I'm very sceptical of 'the Hollywood treatment' a.k.a. cinematic dramatics around matters of (a) religion, and (b) historicity.

This is the Telegraph review, as a counterpoint to the Guardian one I posted above. It's behind a paywall (and I'll try to archive it so we can all read it - I'll post the link shortly, hopefully) but you will get the gist from the headlines.

'Mary: Netflix’s biblical biopic is the worst film of the year

'This bafflingly awful film about the Virgin Mary, starring Anthony Hopkins as Herod, is one bad choice built from thousands of smaller ones'

It received 1 star out of 5 from the Telegraph film critic, Tim Robey.

Here we are: the Telegraph review.

It's a short read. And not flattering.

I watched it last night It is a mixture of truth and fabrication. Joseph and Mary are similar in age in the film. Despite the many examples of artistic license I really enjoyed it. Anthony Hopkins portrays the paranoia of Herod really well. It is nothing like The Chosen though

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 09/12/2024 03:41

Well, I’ve watched it and that’s a couple of hours of my life I won’t get back. It was a fabricated story apparently based very loosely using the Biblical narrative of the birth of Jesus as its theme.

Anthony Hopkins played Anthony Hopkins pretending to be a grumpy, murderous king called Herod. He blinded a poor chap called Baba Ben Buta. We knew he was blinded because he had a big bandage around his eyes in another scene where he married the characters of Joseph and Mary.

There was some nice cinematography, with horses galloping through water, and one pretty scene going off into the sunset. There were some dodgy costumes and even more dodgy head gear. I think the milliners must have had a very tight budget.

There was a bit of a stand off over the character called Mary when she was a maiden in the inner temple. The stand off was in a corridor, between a mysterious and evil sounding man dressed in a large hooded cloak, sporting some very dodgy dental work, and another bloke dressed in a large blue cloak (we saw him a few times). The one with the ugly teeth was called Lucifer and the one in the blue cloak was called Gabriel. The manky-teeth-man growled a couple of times, but did not do an evil mwah-ha-hah laugh.

We saw Lucifer again when he carried Mary off in his arms (hmmm, she was sort of levitated in his arms) when she fainted in early labour in a market square - her hubby had nipped off to try and find them a room for the night. When he got back to find her missing, Joseph grabbed a sword off a soldier, chased after manky-teeth-man to rescue Mary. Mary woke up from her faint in a house which had lost its roof and continued in her labour, with the help of a few women. The baby was born looking three months old and looked like it was wrapped in Mary’s lacy wedding dress.

I was very disappointed not to see shepherds with tea towels on their heads, no nighttime sock washing, nor to see we three kings from orient are. Very disappointed too to not see any cute donkeys or other animals in the house with no roof.

I found it tedious and boring, and found myself nodding off once or twice, so had to rewind. They say all the best stories contain an element of truth - it wasn’t even a good story, let alone a ‘best’.
