Bible in a year

Hi all.. anybody been doing a read the bible in a year study this year or planning one for next year?
I'm going to try following along with Father Mike Schmitz and Jeff Cavins on the Hallow app, starting in the New Year. They are both new to me- I've been listening to Jeff Cavins daily reflections on Hallow and I find him good to listen to.
I'm not going to buy their recommended bible, just using the one I'm currently using.
I've never managed more than a month or two on these things before- feeling a bit more connected at the moment and hoping this will be the year! It's not easy finding the one that's the right fit for you, if you plan to try to stick to it for the year!
Interested in hearing anyone elses plans and experiences.

I listen to Fr Mike's podcast for the Bible in a year. I really like it! I like to listen on a morning as I am getting ready for the day. Although sometimes I skip a day if I have to listen to something else in preparation for work.
I bought my mum the book so she could follow along with her bible and she is enjoying it.

snowlady4 · 27/11/2024 19:56

@Expo23 lovely. Was it the companion book you bought or the actual bible?
I also prefer to listen in the morning. I read the daily scripture and then listen to the reflection. I miss some days too but am trying my best!

I have done this two (separate) years. First time I just read through my bible from start to finish. Second time, I used a "bible in one year" that had the readings divided up by days. I might try a podcast next year.

Fink · 27/11/2024 21:05

I've done the Bible in a Year podcast every year since it was first released (2019?) I often listen on the go so I don't read along, just listen.

I also read Scripture separately. But Bible in a Year I only do the podcast.

I use this 5-day plan:

I like the five day setup as it gives me time to catch up/read ahead for Sunday.
My pattern is to do the bible in a year one year, then choose what books to focus on the next year, then back to bible in a year. The Old Testament passages are long, so I often listen to them on my way to work.

I’ve listened along a few times - think this is my third. I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s supported me through some very dark times. I do have the Great Adventure Bible, but haven’t actually read it.
Sometimes I listen to back to back episodes to catch up

junebirthdaygirl · 28/11/2024 05:40

I have done Nicky Gumbels Bible in one year. I really find it helpful and it has got me reading all scripture instead of maybe going back to Psalms & NT which l was inclined to do.

I completed a reading the Bible in a Year plan from September 2023 - September 2024.

It is tough going and a major project to take on. My recommendation is, if you fall behind, do not lose heart or give up. Pray for God’s help and try to find time to catch up. The furthest I got behind was 12 days, that happened twice, and I caught up both times. You don’t have to catch up all at once, you can read two days worth per day for as many days as it takes until you are back on track.

Also some parts are a slog but others are pacey and I felt at some points like I was watching Eastenders, can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow and so on. And sometimes I’d find a passage that spoke to me on any given day; there are also passages I underlined and made a note “no idea what is going on here”, “what does this mean?” or “God seems harsh” (for some OT passages).

The plan I used was OT (about two chapters), NT (about one chapter) and psalms or proverbs (one chunk) each day. I had a notification on my phone and used an app. I used to read it on the bus.

I’m now doing some theological study with my diocese and I am glad I read the whole Bible through before I started that.

Good luck; pray for God’s help as you undertake this.

@chrichristmascheerisnothere Oh wow, 2 years running! Did you find that you took different things from the different years? Did you use the same bible or a different one?
Have you a podcast in mind that you will use?

@Fink thats amazing you've done it from the start! Will you do it again this year? I've been trying to walk to work and listen to some scripture or daily readings on the way. It really benefits me in so many ways.

@Interl0per the 5 day plan looks great. Thanks for sharing. I did complete a few shorter reading plans on she reads truth, which was good too. I only used the free ones though.

@RedRosesPinkLilies oh maybe this year could be the year!
That bible looks great, as I said, I don't have it, I just use the one I'm already using, which is an ESV. But I'd definitely keep it in mind for next time I'm buying a new one, or maybe a gift.
Do you like it?

@junebirthdaygirl I agree, it takes you out of the comfort zone doesn't it. I'm doing an Isiah bible study at the moment and wasn't particularly looking forward to it.. but finding it really interesting and relevant. Nicky Gumbel is super isn't he.

@erinaceus agreed, it's a big and daunting challenge. And nobody wants to feel like they are failing at it.I think that's why its so important to find a course/podcast/whatever that resonates with you and speaks to you. I did try heart dive on youtube but it wasn't for me, I'd never be successful if I continued with it (not knocking it, works brilliant for some,) but hoping the one I've picked to do suits me and keeps me motivated!
So glad you got so much out of your experience.

@snowlady4 .Its a nice clear Bible and the explanation are helpful/ good.
I really like the parts on the podcast where Jeff Cavins (who’s been a Protestant Pastor as well as Catholic before and after) comes on and explains the background behind each book. He’s a very interesting guy to listen to.

I listen to the Bible in a Year read by David Suchet (Audible). I must admit I'm quite behind on the calendar but slowly working my way through it. I do like the Fr Mike Schmidt one though, his explanations and insights are really thought-provoking. But David Suchet just reads so beautifully.

snowlady4 · 30/11/2024 08:28

@1WanderingWomble David Suchet is gorgeous to listen to isn't he, I agree.
