Group bible study suggestions

Does anyone have any suggestions for a course for a group bible study that I lead

I especially like courses with a video element as it takes the pressure of me with teaching.

Courses we have done over the last couple of years include The Emotionally Healthy Woman (brilliant), Women of the NT, Promises Kept (which I linked with the videos from The Bible Course) and an online course about mentoring.

Any suggestions would be great.

At one time our Bible study group used to go into greater depth regarding what had been preached the previous Sunday. Our study group leader was not a 'teacher' but more of a facilitator who helped us bring Sunday's teaching into how it impacts on our daily living and our walk with Jesus.

Oh that's a good idea.

I like the approach that takes the readings set in the upcoming Sunday's Lectionary and explores and meditates on them. Obviously that is only going to work if your church uses a Lectionary.

When I did that in Lent I wasn't really teaching, just introducing the readings (we started by reading them aloud together), giving a little background, then encouraging everyone to give their own responses. One of the aims was to increase confidence in reading and praying with the Bible.

Is it a women's group?

Borris · 17/11/2024 21:04

Yes it is a women's group. Sorry should probably have written that in the OP

There is something empowering about the reading out loud. The rhythm of the language harmonises quickly and hearing ones own voice say the words gives a sense of ownership of them. People become involved in the scriptures in a way that they aren't if they just hear another person reading them or talking about them.

Do you read together at the same time? We tend to read taking it in turns to read a few verses each.

The best groups I've been to, we've just had a passage (or sometimes a whole book), everyone knows ahead of time what it will be and reads it, and we get together to talk about what we noticed/ were confused by/ were blessed by/ etc. The leader will have done a bit of research (e.g. might quickly take us through the structure of the book) but it's mostly discussion.

Yes, we all read together. I got copies of the leaflets that were to be used at Mass, that had the reading and also the collects etc, so we all had the same version for reading aloud. People were encouraged to read up beforehand in whatever online version that preferred, but it didn't matter at all if they didn't.

I like Agape https://www.agapebiblestudy.com/ because of the notes, but there are loads of sources. Being Catholic, the readings are the same for everyone worldwide.

Discipleship explored, or Fruitfulness on the front line from licc. For a more involved one Esther from Lifeway by Beth Moore. American and has bits to do at home too. We did it once a fortnight instead of every week, more time to do the home sections These all have videos.

Side note: an excellent resource for understanding Jesus and women is “Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes” by Kenneth E Bailey.

Francis Chan’s Who is God series might work well for you. It has videos for each session and there is a workbook to work through with pre-written questions too. We have used it twice with groups (1 a university student group and the other a very diverse group of adults ranging from early 20s-70s) and been challenged by it both times. I wrote my own questions and responses to make it fit better for our groups, but the videos lend themselves to gently guided discussion rather than strict question & answer.

That sounds wonderful! Delving deeper into the Sunday sermon as a group is such an enriching way to grow spiritually and share insights. It must have fostered meaningful discussions and a stronger sense of fellowship.

Yes, it did. I am still on a WhatsApp prayer group with those of us who have not yet gone to glory, and although we now no longer live in the same locality, a handful of us have a weekend away together each year. We have so much fun, and the laughter far outweighs any tears we may have. Giving grateful thanks to God for enduring fellowship and friendship 🙏

The bible says His Holy Spirit will lead us into all Truth. Have faith in that precious biblical promise

Is this a good read?

I also lead Bible studies in a women’s small group. We have really liked the Cynthia Heald series, Becoming a Woman of… from NavPress. E g,

Her titles include Becoming a Woman Who Loves, Becoming a Woman of Excellence and Becoming a Woman of Strength. If you have Kindle Unlimited, some of them are available free as e-books.
