Following the fun we had sharing our favourite hymns, psalms and spiritual songs
in the spirit of Ephesians 5:19-20 I thought we could do the same, but specifically Christmas ones this time.

any suggestions? 😊

speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ …”

Favourite oldie: in the Bleak Midwinter
Favourite newer one: Miracle Child by Gavin Ball
Favourite spine tingler: "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen. ( As mentioned on an earlier thread!)

Also, Adam Lay Ybounden, Gaudete, In Dulci Jubilo.

I'll probably think of some more soon.

Phil Wickham’s Manger Throne has become a firm favourite in this house since it was released last year.

Shepherds Pipe Carol- John Rutter

Fantasia on Christmas Carols- Vaughan-Williams

While Shepherds Watched (Clark of Canterbury version which is sung to a very rousing tune known as Cranbrook, rather similar to Ilkley Moor Ba'taat. Sadly this version isn't sung often but it's gorgeous, very baroque!)

Sir Christemas/ Nowell, sing we!

Coventry Carol (both the Leighton version and the traditional)

FuzzyPuffling · 08/11/2024 16:09

Shepherds Farewell- Berlioz
The Three Kings- Cornelius

Mary Did You Know is one of my favourites.

Mary Did You Know is one of my favourites.

I only came across this a couple of years ago. They use it in the Nativity at Wintershall, and it sends goosebumps down me.

I also like "Shepherd's Pipe Carol" and "A Sign shall be Given" (Immanuel)
I'll save you googling the last one:

The original tune was the "Ilkley Moor Ba'tat" tune, and then someone set silly lyrics to it.

My parents church, which generally is very staid and boring used to sing it to the same tune as "O for a thousand tongues" which is lovely. The only thing is with all the repeating it does make it long.

Check out My Lord Has Come by Will Todd, also Softly by same composer.

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 08/11/2024 19:54

Hark the Herald Angels sing

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 08/11/2024 22:53

My favourites are
In Dulci Jubilo
Come, thou long expected Jesus
In the bleak midwinter
O Holy night
I just love Christmas carols!

MumChp · 08/11/2024 22:59

Angels, from the Realms of Glory.

Wendolino · 08/11/2024 23:03

Carols: Mine are Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, and The Holly and the Ivy.
Song: I also really like Saviour's Day by Cliff Richard. I love the line "many are starting their journey home to be with someone on the Saviour's day". It makes me think of people getting ready to come home for Christmas.

FlySwimmer · 08/11/2024 23:05

The Shepherds’ Carol, Bob Chilcott

FloralGums · 08/11/2024 23:14

Don’t laugh, but for me it’s Little Donkey!
When I sing it or hear it, I am transported back to being a child and the strong feelings of awe and excitement that children experience.
As a child I used to visualise Mary and the donkey with the miracle and joy all ahead of them. Plodding along that dusty road, underneath stars.
I love the chorus - Ring out those bells tonight, Bethlehem, Bethlehem, Follow that star tonight…

Although I love all the very clever school nativities nowadays, sometimes I wish they would just go back to a very basic one with the traditional songs.

Great thread! I’m looking forward to settling down later and listening to lots of these.

I love O Come O Come Emmanuel, which I think was mentioned on the other thread.

My suggestion is a bit left field. It’s not a Christmas song as such, but is about how winter reflects our walk with God sometimes. I love it, and spent ages reading the lyrics when I heard it a few years ago. It’s on our “Christmas playlist” so I think it counts!

In my choir we are singing Pete Churchill's version f O come o come Emmanuel which is a great update in the traditional hymn with a soul/gospel vibe. We did a Groove version of in the bleak midwinter last year.

Wendolino · 09/11/2024 09:27

@FloralGums it really is a lovely song

I was coming on to say Cranbrook too but I didn't think anyone else would know it. I am also very partial to sweet chiming bells.
Are you perhaps from the same very tiny neck of the woods as me?

FuzzyPuffling · 09/11/2024 09:48

I lived in Cornwall and " Cranbrook" was the only tune allowed for " While shepherds watched". Always with a lengthy diatribe about it being " theirs"!

Oddly, I moved to Cornwall from Cranbrook. In Kent!
