molluscum virus?

My friend and her DS came to play in our paddling pool with my DD and i noticed friend's DS had a big yellow spot on his chest. Friend said its some virus that "loads of kids have its so common" she went on and on about how common and harmless it is so i never thought anything more about it. Just noticed DD has a red spot on the inside of her leg (2 weeks after friend's visit) and googled this virus. It says its very contagious and the spots can last weeks/months and can spread to face etc, should avoid sharing pools/baths/towels with other kids when the spots are yellow. Im now really annoyed and worried that my DD has this virus now, i think made worse by the fact that she has to deal with a stammer at the moment and is embarassed about that plus starting "big school" The last thing we need now is big yellow spots on her face Im worried and prob over-reacting (health anxiey also)

Anyones DC have this virus? Ive never heard of it! Is it really that common? And what can i do to get rid of the spots if it is the virus? Thanks for reading

My daughter's have never been big and yellow. DD2 has had 3 lots, and our doctor says its nothing to worry about. This site has some cures for it, but I haven't tried them yet (was thinking about the vinegar). None of my other children have had it, I have have a couple.
DD2 did have a few on her face, but they weren't that hideous, and the scarring is fading.
It is common so your DC will come in contact at school.

Don't be influenced by US sites, normally linked to US drug companies. Go and see your GP if you are concerned.

Fab thankyou so much, just hearing that she will prob come into contact with it at school anyway has really calmed me. I wonder my her DS's were huge and yellow..? Thats what made me panic they looked hideous.

Thanks for replying mummytime

both my lo's had it but they were small and looked a little like warts or skin tags. DD had quite a lot and did have some on her face as well as the crook of her arm and her tummy. DS had far fewer and were on his tummy mainly with a couple on his legs. My sisters 3 kids also had them as do at least one of dd's friends at school. Both dd and ds's have cleared up now but it did take a while, particularly for dd's to go.

cornsilky · 10/07/2010 16:15

my ds'sboth had it on their backs and it didn't spread anywhere else
It is very common - I think ds1 caught it from swimming and then passed it on to ds2
Some posters on here say that 8 hour cream gets rid of it

neverenoughMEtime · 10/07/2010 16:15

Thanks seona. Im hoping this spot isn't the virus but i feel a little calmer about it now. Do you still bath your kids together if they have the virus? DD loves bathing with DD2...

Oh thanks cornsilky! I feel much better after reading all your replies. Sorry if my post sounded rather panicky

Do you know what the 8 hour cream is called?

yes I still bathed the kids together and they still went swimming too. The 8 hour cream is by Elizabeth Arden. I tried a couple of 'cures' but they never worked and they went away in their own time.

My two eldest DC have had it. DD got it first and hers lasted about a year, with spots coming and going over that time. Sometimes there were quite a lot and other times there were only one or two. They were on her body and not on her face.

DS1 got them about six months after DD's started. His weren't so bad and didn't last as long as DDs.

TBH they went away over time and my GP told me the treatment was worse than having them so normally they don't bother treating children with them.

neverenoughMEtime · 10/07/2010 18:07

Yes i did read on google that treatment may cause worse scarring..so think i will keep an eye on the spot and see what happens.

Good to hear everyones experiences will get DH to read this when he gets home!

Agree with all above. If your DD does have it, you'll want others to be sympathetic too and won't want her excluded from playing with others! I overheard nasty comments about my baby DD's 'warts' at a baby group and haven't been back since. I think (hope!) it's finally disappearing for us.

FlyingFig · 11/07/2010 21:12

Ds has had his (mainly his face) for over 18 months now - it's an awful virus but you kind of get used to it (or get used to the fact there's not a jot you can do about it!).

DD had them but they didn't last very long nor did they spread so it seems they affect children in different ways. A few of DS's have become infected so he's required antibiotics but the antibiotics won't get rid of the molloscum, just the infection within the spots.

It's one of those things that can't be helped - but it's frustrating all the same.

I'd never even heard of the damned things until DS got them!
