coeliacs disease

Hi

My DD (2.5) is severely intolerant to lactose, soya & oats and has recently developed an intolerance to something else, although no idea what as its like looking for a needle in a haystack...

Her dietician (had appt on Monday) suggested that she may have coeliacs disease and needs to be tested for it.

What are the symptoms of coeliacs and how do they test for it??

TIA

(have also posted this in Allergies)

checkout celiac.com
BTW in children tests can be inconclusive.
Lactose and many other intolerances are often a result of wheat intolerances.
Yes, they can try blood test or endo-test, but whilst continuing to eat wheat-based diet, she is likely to get worse.
With my ds I was so desperate, that I took him off wheat to see if it was possible that it could make a difference. When it worked, I convinced our paed and eventually got him as "treat as celiac". We have access to prescription, but don't take it up any more as we only buy really small amounts of carbs and avoid wheat generally. I felt his health was more important than trying to live "up to" the level of sickness needed to prove the point, esp when I found out that severe damage can be irreversible.

Whats an endo test?

I suspect that she may have coeliacs tbh as the more I read the more it fits with her symptoms iyswim

ATM she is dairy, soya & oats free but is reacting badly to something else which I suspect could be barley....

She had a blood test for coeliacs when she was under a yr old which came back that she did not have it obviously along with other tests for allergies etc.

Unfortunately one of the peads we see is an absolute idiot and thinks there is nothing wrong with her and its all in my mind

I think I will have to make appt with GP for next week and see what she suggests....

it's an internal biopsy (we declined)
wheat reaction (even celiac) is not allergy, so allergy tests are often inconclusive - or the damage has to be very severe for it to be conclusive
I look at it now as a lifestyle choice and avoid wheat with my ds, also soya, and we are dairy lite (using predominantly goats dairy if any)

do look up celiac.com forum, people there are awesomely knowledgeable

thanks nightcat

Am looking at it now.

It has adverts for home tests for coeliacs advertised. Is it worth trying one of them do you think?

I never bothered, was so desperate that we went gluten free as I just HAD TO know if there was any hope.
Since then I found out that there is a wide spectrum of sensitivity and only the severe end can be picked up. Luckily our paed knew how desperate I was and was happy to accept the diet improvement.
My ds symptoms were unusual and would not have been picked up by a standard test, in the end he had a genetic test to confirm that he had the gluten sensitivity (not celiac) gene.
But the main thing that convinced me was the awesome diet improvement.

Thanks for all your help

I think I will make an appt with my GP for next week and see what she says too.

I guess I have to decide whether to go gluten/wheat free now or wait till after testing is done.

TBH her diet is soooo restricted already I am reluctant to cut anything else out without help from pead or dietician
