Nightime temperatures and crying - help!

My 8 month daughter has always had good naps during the day and then slept really well at nightime, going down at about 7pm and sleeping for 12-13 hours.
The last two nights she has woken up really crying with a horribly high temperature and her body on fire (she is sleeping in just a vest). She wants cuddles and lies on me sucking her thumb but wide awake for nearly four hours (1:30-4:30am night one, 11pm-2:30am last night). I'm giving her calpol/nurofen when she wakes to bring down the temperature and then staying up with her or bringing her to bed with me. She sleeps a little but wakes herself up crying when she falls into deep sleep or for some other random reason. She won't lie down next to me or lie in her cot without crying.
In the morning, the temperature's gone, she's all smiles and very happy - although off her milk and food at times.
She has no teeth yet so I'm aware this could be teething but there are no other symptons (dribbling, chewing on things, nappy rash, etc) and no sign of gum splitting or teeth coming through.
I can't get an appointment at the docs today. What's going on? Any advice welcome. please.

I'm in Switzerland so this is just a guess, but is it really hot at night? She could be waking due to that? [grasping at straws]
