OMG!! My DC have had these things for months now, they are just not going, we can go a week or 2 with nothing, then they come back with a vengence.

Has anybody got a really good solution for this? at my wits end trying to get rid of the little buggars.

I use Dr Johnson's Aromatherapy Shampoo and Conditioner with tea tree and neem oil and comb the little buggars out (I get it from Savers) then carry on using it as their normal shampoo for a few weeks it really does seem to repel them and don't forget that the eggs hatch out (I think it's) two weeks after being laid.
The worst thing about nits (in my opinion) is that there are always some kids whose parents don't notice they have them so don't treat their kids hair so everyone else catches them again!

You have to condition and comb thoroughly every three days for several weeks to ensure that every single baby louse is removed from the hair before it gets chance to lay any eggs. It is a complete PITA but I learned last summer that none of the lotions and potions work 100%. The only sure fire way is to keep combing wet hair with conditioner two or three times a week.

I was advised by a nurse once to put vodka in the conditioner and it does seem to help - the drunk lice find it harder to hold on I think.

Just keep combing and combing and combing......

Then do it every week so that you catch it early next time.

My Dd1 has really long and amazingly thick hair - so thick that plaits look ridiculous. That's why we tried all the lotions and potions. The oil based ones were a nightmare because it took an hours solid shampooing to get it out.

In the end I realised that the only way to get the little critters out successfully is the hard way. I gritted my teeth and did it every three days for few weeks and believe me that is no easy task with a 12 year old with Asperger's syndrome. I made myself do it without fail and after four weeks she was clear. We kept going for another two just to be sure and they have not come back. I had spent months and a lot of money up to that point and it was all wasted.

It really is the only successful way to do it.

Hedrin works really well. Two treatments 7 days apart. My daughter's class is rife with them and she has caught them about 6 times this year!

Al1son · 07/07/2010 21:24

You are lucky vjg, I tried it twice, 7 days apart both times but some of the little blighters must have survived. Maybe it's because her hair is so thick.

zandy · 07/07/2010 22:28

Once you have cleared them, conditioner and combing DOES work, apply hairspray daily. I've worked in infant/nursery for eight years and got caught many times until I started applying hairspray. Not had any since.

Al1son · 07/07/2010 23:49

That's really interesting. would it be cheeky to ask how long your hair is? DD's is long and very thick so it would take a lot to cover it.

actonchildminder · 08/07/2010 07:53

so I should condtion the hair and fine tooth comb it, every 3 days then once none can be found use hair spray everyday? is it any particular hairspray or just any one? sorry if thats sounds a silly question, (some might be stronger than others lol) i dont use hairspray.
