Recurring migraine in my 4 year old DS.any tips?

My 4 year old ds is currently sleeping very deeply after he complained for the third time since last Thursday of a 'horrible' headache.
He is not at all whingey re physical pain,so i am taking this seriously.
He seems to only find relief lying in a dark room and sleeping.

I have checked for other symptoms but the only thing he said was that his tummy felt 'funny'.That was last thursday, during his first bout.
his second was yesterday and now today.
It seems to be at it's worst just after lunch each day.

I haven't a clue what to do to help him other than calpol and cold compress.

Could it be related to a testosterone surge?

If anyone can offer any advice,i'd be very grateful.I want my Red Ranger back!

If a four year old has constant headaches then he needs to go to a doctor.

Mamalade · 06/07/2010 15:55

Thanks scurryfunge.I agree.

It's not constant though. It comes and goes, hence my confusion.

Best get it checked out....is he dehydrated do you think?

Mamalade · 06/07/2010 16:13

He is complaining of thirst but he is taking plenty of fruit juice and water.

It could be the heat...my ds has complained of headaches....he is still doing all his physical activities but hardly drinking any water.....so it was soon sorted.
Hope he feels better soon.

speaking from expierence i think you are right and he has migraines. Including tummy migraines.

My DS is under the city of london migraine clinic.

If is is a migraine calpol will be doing no good, as the first thing that 'shuts down' is the stomach, my ds has a medication to stop his stomach shuting down so he can then have pain relief that will be absorbed. If not it just lays on the top of tummy and oesn't actually work IWYKIM. After a migraine a person can feel rough for up to 3 days as they totally drain the body. Try going to the chilrens section of the national migraine society, they helped us in the short term.

My ds has a migraine on average 3-4 times a week, when we took him to the GP we were told they don't medicate until they are 12 so thats why we went to the london clinic. He wrote to the gp and explained everything to him and told him what medication he needed and that is how we got it.

Does he get constantly hungry during an 'attack'?

NO rela advice but i hope your ds gets better soon.

Thank you scurryfunge.Me too.
Thanks morethan, for your response also.I did wonder if the calpol was having any effect.
He doesn't seem to be any hungier than usual,he just wants to go straight to sleep when it occurs.

He's just woken up and is between wanting to go out and play and whimpering that it hurts.

He's just said he's starving and can he eat crackers in the garden!
I'm beyond confused.

Maybe you need to get his eyes checked by an optician?

And drink lots of water - cut out the fruit juice for a while... that's what works for me...

My ds who is 9 has been getting migraines since he was about 2 1/2 - 3 when he was at pre-school. They come on quickly, bad light sensitivity, feels/is sick, cries with the pain, goes to sleep, wakes up spaced out but more or less ok. They happen about once a week. We were told to try giving him a prophylactic dose of Calpol which we did so he could have a break from them over christmas but this doesn't feel like a long term solution to me and my dh. We find the best thing for easing the pain (not getting rid of it completely) is the cold gel patches you can buy in the chemists/supermarkets - one on the forehead, one on the back of the neck. He also wears a hat and sunglasses in bright weather and we try and keep his tv/computer game time down.
