Morrison's Magazine

Just wondered what other people's opinions are on this.

In their most recent edition, Morrisons have done one of those comparison tests with a panel of mums, the subject being soft drinks.

Quite a number of the drinks have 'No Added Sugar' which the panel have all pretty much concluded are the 'healthier option' for families . There is no mention whatsoever of the addition of chemical sweeteners which is of course a contentious issue for lots of people.

What are other people's views on this?

I always buy the no added sugar drinks because they are lower calorie, my dcs won't drink water in great enough quantities to stay hydrated so for me they are a compromise.

I never buy no added sugar drinks as I and my ds have an intolerance to some of the sweeteners - though tthey don't seem to affect dd.

I cringe every time they are lauded as the healthy option.

That's what I thought islandofsodor.

I'm not sure that people always realise that no added sugar means full of chemicals and that there is a school of thought that most definitely don't see them as healthy.

it's total manipulation by the manufacturers/advertisers, they make it out to be so much healthier but they aren't - not overall anyway. just because it's got less calories doesn't mean it's better! perhaps if you want to lose weight it's better to switch, but not as good as ditching the fizzy/sweet drinks altogether obviously.

I don't personally buy the whole E-numbers = hyper kids idea, but I just generally don't like all that stuff. I have a pepsi max once a week or so, as I don't like the regular types, and that's it.

also, sweeteners can increase your appetite for sugary stuff anyway, because they trick the body into expecting the sugar rush that normally goes with the sweet taste - so maybe you're more likely to snack and get the calories that way!

I would go for the sugar rather than sweetners as the best of a bad deal. Cant see how chemical sweetners can be healthier. Not all kids like water sadly and even apple and orange juice (pure) are acidic so rot teeth.
My son was sensitive to E numbers (very hyper) but that was back in the bad old days of sunset yellow and quinoline all banned now)!

I would buy the sugar laden ones any day over the chemically sweetend ones. Same with butter versus margerine. Luckily for us, DD drinks bucket loads of water (although she wouldn't turn down a 7 up if it's on offer)
