Bad breath not teeth related

LaCerbiatta · 06/07/2010 09:56

Dd (4.5) has really bad breath, specially in the morning. She's been to the dentist recently and her teeth are fine, so it's not that. Any thoughts? It's slightly better since we stopped milk before bed so it looks like a digestion problem?

Any ideas would be most welcome!

Does she snore? It could be enlarged adenoids.

LaCerbiatta · 06/07/2010 10:07

No, she doesn't snore....
Would a visit to the GP be worth it? I keep thinking they won't do anything....

dehydration? My DH's breath reeks if he hasn't drunk enough fluid, especially in the morning but at other times in the day as well.

DS1 sometimes gets this with catarrh

LaCerbiatta · 06/07/2010 10:42

She's quite good at drinking water so I don't think it's dehydration.
Saltire, catarrh makes it worse but even with out it it really smells....

I find it is often snot related (now might be the right time to introduce that lovely term... nasal drip....).

Otherwise maybe it is digestion? If she is quite catarrh-y, then perhaps cut out dairy from her diet. DS is quite a snotty child, and he is always better off without the dairy....

LaCerbiatta · 06/07/2010 11:13

She's not catarrh-y or snotty at all but I wouldn't be surprised if it was dairy related. Milk is still a big part of her diet though, I'm not sure it would be a good idea to remove it.

Well, you could try cutting it out for a week say, and see if there is a noticeable difference?

nightcat · 06/07/2010 20:47

I had that for ages when I had a blocked eustachian tube, has she had any ear infections in recent months/years?
Going dairy free helped me to decongest my ears.

My DD's breath really smells when she has tonsillitis. It's one of the earliest indications. Her sister was the same before hers were removed.

i saw a program the other week where a child was suffering from bad breath as a result of having something stuck in her ear and nose. Wouldn't hurt to ask your GP.

LaCerbiatta · 08/07/2010 16:17

Thanks everyone! I'll book with the GP and see what they say.

maxpower: what was stuck?? mucus or a foreign object?
