What do you think is wrong with my little boy?

He started being sick on friday night - no fever just clingy and vomiting - quite a few times until 5am the next morning. Then he seemed ok, though not quite himself on saturday and was sick again after lunch but keeping fluids down. He seemed even better yesterday but is not washed out, flaky, and has been sick twice again today. He's not pale and no rash and wants to eat and drink etc.

What do you think? I was going to see how he is a bit later and take him to the Dr this afternoon if needs be.

He was playing and running around yesterday. Today he is looking around and engaging in between sleeping but would rather be sitting or sleeping!

I think he just has a bug. I wouldn't bother taking him to the dr, you'll just spread it around.

I'd get him checked out by the GP, not because there's likely to be anything seriously wrong, but because if he's still being sick today it would probably help him to get some of those powder drinks with electrolytes in them.

If you don't want to take him out to the docs, you could give him some cooled boiled water with half a tsp of salt and 2 tsps of sugar per pint & get him to sip it slowly (will probably have to make it more palatable with squash)

If he's still being sick tomorrow I would definitely take him to the GP

I would just offer plenty of fluids to keep him hydrated and plain foods (toast, banana - avoid dairy) and see how he goes.

As long as he is well in himself, I wouldn't go to the doctor.

Keep a note though of what he is eating/drinking and when the vomiting occurs so that, should you have to go the doctor at a later time, you have a clear idea of what has happened and any pattern.

HTH.

I'd go to the nhs direct website.

They have a good diagnosis section, which will then advise you as to whether they think you should see someone or not.

When I did it with DS, they called me back to ask a few more questions, and we ended up going to A&E for tests.

(He was fine - just a nasty bug).

It's a good first step, I think.

Thank you so much for your replies. He's just woken up on the sofa, jumped off and starting grabbing food off DD and I's plates so he's eating rice cake, peppers and cucumbers so not the best choice. I'll wait and see what happens! He looks much perkier than he did this morning though. and he was last sick at 10am.

BPS Your DS sounds like he's had a bit of a tummy bug. I wouldnt worry too much unless it goes on for much longer - it seems to be easing off which is what should happen.

I would really not advise home made rehydration drinks with salt sugar etc. This is because with D&V sodium (salt) and also potassium are lost from the body, and they need to be in a very fine balance in the body. To give only the sodium part will futher imbalance these 2 salts. Give dioralyte

which has the correct balance. A simple salt solution may be advised in less developed countries but Dioralyte is far safer.

Dioralyte Relief powder(which is dioralyte plus rice) is really good because the rice in it helps to settle the stomach. I always found it better than plain dioralyte as it seems to be more anti emetic.
