DS has severe impetigo - how to the rest of us catching it?

DS1 (4) has very bad impetigo which has spread all over the place. It is very sore and weeping and mainly on his bottom and legs.

He is on oral antibiotics so hopefully should be clearing up but how do we stop us all getting it? I can't top him touching it and it' too uncomfortable (and too hot) to keep it all covered up.

I've washed all the towel and sheet on 60 and will do the same with his clothes but what about the sofa, chair etc?

It feels like we are all rotting!

Oh poor you. My sister was very susceptible to impetigo. Mum used to do all the washing you've described, and that seemed to work, as none of the rest of us (I am one of 4) every got it. I think she may also have put clean sheets over the sofa and chairs, which she chnaged every day.

Same with nits! Poor sis seemed to pick up every cootie going, and we got none!

keep your ds towels seperate - and not just whils he has the impetigo now, but for always and make sue your ds has about plenty of his own towels and you keep them washed between uses.

if it does reapear then get the gp to do a nose swab, as they can be harbouring the stuff up their nose.

Make sure you change the pillow case every morning and wash on a hot wash.

Thank you, he looks like he's got the plague

fruitstick - which antibiotic is he on?

BiscuitsandBaileys · 03/07/2010 08:49

Your poor DS fruitstick
I started a post yesterday about impetigo. Can you get your DS to sit on towels?
It sounds really sore, but the antibiotics should start working soon.

BiscuitsandBaileys · 05/07/2010 09:48

How is your ds today fruitstick?

fruitstick · 05/07/2010 10:23

He's made a miraculous recovery. Now on day 4 of his antibiotics and it's all receding massively and far less sore. Still a bit itchy but I think that's because it's drying up.

Told my childminder this morning who mentioned that another of her mindees had it last week .

I have asked her to let the other parents know and they are going to put a notice up at pre-school. I would have much rather know what it was immediately than let it get so bad before taking him to the doctor.

Am busy hotwashing sheets but no idea what I do about the sofas etc. DS likes to sit around with no trousers and, initially, I thought it was better to let the air get to it

Thats great news that he's getting better!
The same thing happened when dd got it the first time. I took her back to school after half term and told them what she'd had, and they said "oh, we had a few in her class with that before they broke up." I was putting germolene on it thinking it was a nasty bite, but had I known impetigo was about I would have got her checked out sooner.
Is your sofa fabric? Maybe you could just give it a wipe over and hope for the best

fruitstick · 05/07/2010 14:53

Right, now I think I have it. Have a spot on my face which is leaking clear liquid.

What do I do (apart from not touch it).

If I put savlon spray on it will it go away or do I need antibiotic cream?

Did your ds get any cream for his impetigo? If he didn't, and you are sure it is that maybe your gp could do you a prescription for some. My dd's got fucidin, which lots of others said they were given.
I can't believe how contagious this is.
