My dd (2yrs)has had a temp of between 38.7 and 39.7 all day. Appears sleepy but not listless, GP checked over and said to observe overnight. Taking some milk but no food. Calpol having little effect. how long do i let this go on for?

It sound like a viral infection. If you are sure she doesn't present any worrying symptoms except the fever, then I would alternate calpol with ibuprofen and wait til tomorrow.
If you think there's something 'not right', take her to A&E. I know it's not very helpful, sorry, I imagine if I was in your position I would try to go by 'instinct' iyswim.

What winny said, if you're not overly concerned about her then alternate calpol and calprofen. When mine have been really ill, I've always 'known' (but not always acted quickly enough to my regret), but even when temp has been 40 or so, if they seem ok just poorly then I've not worried.

Thanks, she has no real symptoms apart from temp. She is sleeping at mo (still obsessively taking temp every hour!)

Sleep is the best thing for her then. Don't wake her just to take her temp!

Ibuprofen better than calpol. Good sign that she is taking fluids. Would see how she responds to the ibuprofen.

Ps hope she feels better tomorrow, and that you rest tonight as well

Thanks for the help and reassurance xx
