wheezing and coughing 6 month old

my ds has been wheezy since about 6 weeks old, it comes and goes and he never has difficulty breathing and been to doctors a couple of times when he was about 3 months old to have chest checked but they couldn't do much. he is also 24 pounds at 6 months which is off the scale, could this be anything to do with it? has anyone else had experience of wheezing in babies?

Some babies are 'happy wheezers'. If there is no evidence of other respiratory symptoms then treatment isn't usually indicated.

If his wheezing is accompanied by cough, any change in his colour, difficulty in breathing or drowsiness/floppiness then you need to seek attention.

But if he's otherwise well (and he's growing nicely!) it may just be anatomical and he may grow out of it. Babies don't really have necks, and well padded babies can get anatomical compression of the trachea which can occasionally cause symptomless wheezing.

Sometimes we prescribe an inhaler to see if there is any improvement, so it may be worth asking your GP for one to keep at home to give him when he's wheezy.

thanks so much for really helpful replies, he came out back to back and hand on head and I was pushing for 3 hours and I think that resulted in him having a stiff neck and he does seem quite compressed around his neck area so maybe that's not helping.

You can try to raise the head part of his cot matress by putting something underneith the matress (like an old towel), this should help, just be careful he can't escape! His room may be a little dry aswell, try putting a damp cloth over the radiator, as it drys it releases water. It does sound like he needs an inhaler aswell so you need to ask your GP for this.
There are paediatric chiropractors that can help with his neck.
