any ideas? ds is 3.2 and just miserable. He was roasting hot last night (no covers but summer PJs on,) not sweating though.

Today he is very tired, sad, no appetite or energy and his eyes look very sore, like he's been crying for ages, with swollen lids. Couldn't leave him at nursery school as he was inconsolable. He came home and slept for 2 hours instead (he already slept for an hour in the morning).

I'm surprised you attempted to take him to a nursery setting.

If the eyelids are quite swollen, it could be periorbital cellulitis, which is a serious infection.

I would take him to get checked out.

Hope better soon...

G0ingPostal · 28/06/2010 17:44

well obviously he was ok when I took him! he was hot last night, fine this morning, usually has a quick nap before nursery school.

but once I left him he couldn't cope and has slept, been hot, swollen eyes etc since mid-afternoon. eyelids are swollen but like he's been crying not massively so, will check it out anyway.

thanks

Does he have a rash/temp?

I am thinking possibly he has been out in the sun too long.

Has he been immunised against measles?

If not, look in his mouth - this is where the first, pearly spots of measles appear.

Sorry - don't want to scare you, but measles starts with high temp and sore eyes.

G0ingPostal · 28/06/2010 17:59

he's had MMR, and no rash.

he was in the sun quite bit on Sat I think (was with GPs all day), though had suncream and/or UV suit. In shade yesterday and most of today. Had hat & sun cream on in sun today.

He feels sick now though hasn't been.

Is he weeing ok? Sounds like too much sun/heat. Is he drinking ok?

Sorry - got to go out now - hopefully someone with more ideas will be along soon.

If you are worried phone NHS direct or GP. Best to be on the safe side.

leavingonajetplane · 28/06/2010 18:14

Fever, swelling of upper and lower eyelids, red or purple eyelid, eye pain, general malaise

are all symptoms of orbital celluitis which needs immediate attention because of the risks to sight.

So I would take him to be seen or at least ring NHS direct if you havent already.

G0ingPostal · 28/06/2010 20:19

thanks all. NHS direct reckon viral infection. temp is steady at 102 so will keep an eye on him. poor chap, he is just so hot, has perked up a lot otherwise.

To be honest, it does sound like periorbital celulitis, he needs to be seen by a doctor ASAP. The temp could be a fever from the infection.
I'd take him to a childrens A&E, the treatments is normally IV antibiotics. Please do get him looked at, NHS direct can't see down the phone and have been known to screw up.

IMoveTheStars · 28/06/2010 20:30

why ask for advice if you're going to ignore it? NHS will just advise you keep an eye on him, and it sounds like he really needs to be seen by a doctor to check his eyes out.

Not being mean, just have seen many many threads where the OP asks for advice, everybody screams 'get thee to a gp' and it's ignored, so no offence meant

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 28/06/2010 20:37

There was a thread on here last year about a small child with a painful leg. NHS direct told the mother to leave it as the child had probably got their leg stuck in the cot bars (telepathic staff or what!), she took her child to A&E and the doctor went nuts! The potential for missing something that was potentially very serious was huge.

beammeupscotty · 28/06/2010 20:49

Periorbital cellulitis is very serious but also very distinctive. If the eyes look anything like this go to a&e
www.google.co.uk/images?q=periorbital%20cellulitis%20picture&rlz=1I7ACPW_enGB325&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc= &um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
Personally I think it sounds a bit sun stroky. They dont need sunburn to have sunstroke. Probably viral tho !
Hope he's OK soon

G0ingPostal · 28/06/2010 21:21

thanks for the pics beammeupscotty - ds's eyes are nothing like that, nowhere near as puffy or swollen or near- / half-shut. he doesn't have eye pain and he only has swollen eye-lids, like he's been crying, not hugely red/ purple and not lower eyelids as outlined in post above.

really do appreciate the advice and concern from everyone. I was most worried because of his temp which has now come down a bit, and because he wasn't sweaty or clammy - made me think heatstroke. he perked up about an hour ago and is asleep now, feeling much cooler obviously.

leavingonajetplane · 28/06/2010 22:56

That was me. And i wouldnt rule it out just because his lower eyelids arent swollen or its not as bad as illustrative photos.

Still be an idea to let a medical professional see him.

IMoveTheStars · 01/07/2010 20:26

G0ingPostal, how's your DS? x

G0ingPostal · 05/07/2010 17:20

Jareth, that's kind of you to ask (sorry to have taken so long to come back!)

ds is fine, his temp went up again for another night but his eyes were back to normal then, and since last Weds he's been back to his old self.

thanks for the concern and advice, I was keeping a careful watch on the state of his eyes after reading the above.
