i have absolutely no idea, hence the post

her front teeth are badly discoloured, poss because of an accident she had as a toddler. if there is anthing that can be done before she goes to secondary school then we are up for it.

are caps permanant??? are they straightforward???are they expensive???

My DS has "built up" teeth as he broke both his permanent fron teeth at about aged 8.

To strat with I believed they would give him veneers once his orthodontic work had finished, as no point capping/crowning/veneering a wonky tooth, but now his braces are off the dentist & Orthodontist recommend we leave any permanent work until he is an adult.

They are very happy to keep replacing the "filling" bits as they do discolour & break, but to have anythhing else means reducing what is left of the tooth for the veneer/cap to fit, and as they are young (and boys) liable to v.expensive breakages. They will not last forever, and for every replacement more of the original tooth will be lost, so delay as long as possible.

Of course, we had broken not discoloured teeth, but they may advise whitening?

Hope you get something sorted before he gets too self conscious. My DS couldn't wait for braces to fix his teeth, as he has had problems since knocking a tooth out aged 3, but now looks lovely

thank you

the teeth are healthy enough, just brownish rather than white the meagre research i have done indicates that bleaching etc prob won't work as the actual teeth are that colour, as oppose to being stained, IYSWIM?

dd is actually ok with it at the mo as she is firmly convinced it was beacuse of her accident (nothing major, just fell smack on her face as a toddler and "killed" her baby front teeth), but you know how kids are , sooner or later someone will be mean and it will bother her

My dd has veneers on her front teeth, which were very discoloured in a splodgy sort of way. Many of her adult teeth came through without enamel , and she is being seen on a regular basis at our Dental/teaching hospital. she's had teeth extracted, a crown on one and many other fun things. Now at 13 she's moving on to the orthodontists.

She's not madly happy with the veneers as they are yellowish (to match her other teeth), but her consultant says when she's finished the orthodontist bit she can have them all done with much whiter veneers.

I would try to get a referral to your local dental hospital and they will let you know what can be done and whether her teeth are bad enough to be done there.

Dd has not really been teased about her teeth (and they are truly bad) so don't worry about your dd too much.

I broke my front tooth when I was 8 and had it filled at the back (now it's sort of convex instead of concave like the other one). You could see the line and different colour of the tooth/filling from the front.

When I was 17 I had a veneer fitted to the front of the broken tooth. It didn't/doesn't hurt and it's still going strong now (I'm 33) although I think the gum above has changed shape slightly. It will have to be replaced at some point and it does mean I can't whiten my teeth because the veneer won't whiten so I'd have mismatched colours.

My dd has same problem as yours Mayo, adult teeth came through with horrid yellow stains and uneven surface . We were told she needs to wait until she's 16 for veneers (I can't remember why now).

Our dentist has done a temporary patch-up job, which has really improved their appearance. I think she removed some of the tooth surface and put in some whitish filler.
I believe the veneers are pricey and need changing every ten years; that is what we were told when dd was 8 (she's 12 now); I'm not sure if things have moved on since then.

I hope all goes well.

ds3 had a "silver glove" on his premolar. The dentist wanted to take it out but said it would mean taking out a healthy tooth the other side to prevent him developing a crooked smile !!???

As he wasn't due to lose the the tooth naturally for some few years she said she would try and save it.

He had the cap for 4 years - it was taken out about 6 months ago because the adult tooth underneath was trying to come up and was being forced to grow round it

We didn't pay for any of it

Ds1 has no enamel on his adult teeth so they are a very yellowy brown. He's ten and not particularly self-conscious about them although they are very noticeable. Every time I bring it up with the dentist he just says to wait.

dentist amazingly helpful!!

looked at her record etc and apparently she has weak enamel. although (touch wood) she has no fillings etc yet her teeth are much more prone to decay and so it is likely she will have probs with her back teeth as well.

BUT although dentist advised to wait as long as we can, basically as soon as dd feels it is a prob then he will put veneers on her front teeth (v v thin porcelain cover) COVERED BY NHS!!!!!

and apparently it won't hurt either. re back teeth again if they begin to give her probs then they can be capped but not sure about timescale/price/painfactor with that.

so altogether i am feeling very positive thank you everybody for your input - am that nhs/dental attitudes seem to vary so much across the country!!!
