So 3 weeks ago DD (3m) developed a mild dose of what we assumed to be chickenpox. She wasn't bothered by it and had noly a few spots which did indeed look like chickenpox (ie blistered then scabbed).

My two boys hadn' ad it so we watched and waited. Last week (14days after DD). DS2 (3) broke out in a small crop o spots on his tummy and one leg - about 5 spots on each. They appeared at once bu didn't blister adn went straight to scabs. The nursery noticed these spots yesterday and there was one fresh spot and sent him home.

Yesterday DS1 (5) borke out in a crop of spots. He has quite a few more and they are larger but again haven't blistered.

Does chiken pox always blister? Could it be something else?

Thanks!

If they only have a mild dose of chicken pox the may get it again in due course.

To be fair they are highly contagious if they do have it, so I can see why the nursery sent him home. Mine had chicken pox about 4 weeks ago and I was housebound for 5 days from when the spots appeared. So that I didn't pass it onto anyone else. Although they are contagious before the spots appear but there wasn't much I could do about that

I'd look at the symptoms described on NHSdirect website and the pictures and see if it really is chicken pox. The incubation period can be 10-12 days so it sound possible. Not all children do get masses of spots as well. But if the chicken pox isn't that bad, they can get it again

No doubt someone wiser will be along soon

I'm pretty sure that DD had understand why DS was sent home (although he was scabbed).

Neither of the boys blistered the way DD did. Also whilst they are clearly itchy - it is not the maddening itch that Irecall from when I had it.

Confounded as we are de to fly to Canada on Wednesday

Interestingly ont he NHS website they mention that some believe that when people have chicken pox a second time it is possible that it was a misdiagnosis the first time round.

cheers!

Don't think that either of my boys blistered BPM, though ds2 went onto get it again as both had it very mildly.

I recognised it immediately with them as I had a similar dose as an adult to your ds TeamEdward. Gruelling when it's that severe, isn't it?!

bump - anyone else?

From the timings I think it sounds highly likely to be chilcken pox. I think the weather affects how the spots come out sometimes. I say this because dd1 had chicken pox in England in April when it was cool, then dd2 came out with it 2 weeks later in Thailand where it was 45C and humid. DD2's spots never crusted over, I'm sure because she was so hot and sweaty and there was so much moisture in the air. They just came up as spots - looked a bit like insect bites - then went down again. Could this be the case with yours that the weather is hotter now than 2 weeks ago....? (I have no scientific proof for my theory though!)

BulletProofMum · 26/06/2010 15:33

It certainly sounds similar - he's just got a few bumps - just like bites.

Don't know if to send him to school next week...

I would assume it's chicken pox and send him to school 5 days after the last spots appear - sorry...!

Also, forgot to say, I think if their skin has had a lot of suncream on then that may affect the appearance of the spots - again no scientific proof, just my experience with dd2!

I think some of ds' spots failed to blister or were just so small, you couldn't see the fluid in them.

He remained completely unbothered by them and, even waiting for the last one to scab, was back at school four days after the first spot.

Dd got it 13 days later and almost became one big red inflamed blob and was seemingky quite poorly for a couple of days. She took a lot longer to recover completely.

One of ds' school friends was off school (at the same time as Ds) for 3 weeks because new spots just kept on appearing.

So the only sure thing is that different children an contract cp from each other, one after the other or at the same time and all react diiferently and you can't predict how!

My ds came up in fluid-filled spots just like c pox 10 days after being exposed to it. But they just deflated again rather than bursting and crusting over. Never did find out if it was c pox or not!
