OK,

she has a bad ear infection with fever, started antibiotics this morning and due to take another dose in half an hour.~

But, she's vomited twice this evening, hungry, then eats then vomits...if she takes the antibiotic on an empty stomach she'll vomit that won't she?

What to do?

It sounds like the antibiotics are too strong for her so she needs to have something different. I probably wouldn't give her a dose and get her seen by the out of hours first thing in the morning. You could try giving her some though and see what happens? Give her a drink aswell as she'll be dehydrated, then if she does vomit it will be a little better as it's horrid to just retch.

Has she got a headache? stiff neck?

mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:21

yes, has a headache.

Bloody hell,

I hope I don't have to take her back again in the morn.

I agree she needs to change AB, it is v likely she will vomit them if her tummy is already upset. V difficult to know what to do I would explain to OOH.

How is she in herself ear infections are hugely painful poor thing

mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:22

She feels really rough. But was starving hungry at tea time.

OP posts:
mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:22

Can't I just give her half a dose of the AB?

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/06/2010 23:24

No, it needs to be the full dose or nothing. Half won't do anything.

Is her neck stiff? OK with bright lights? Stiff/sore legs? Rash?

mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:29

She's lying on the sofa next to me. Is 13 so not a baby. No rash, no stiff neck, drinking water ok.

Was ok-ish an hour ago and said she was starving...had some bread, plain rice and then a yoghurt. Vomited that. At tea time she had some bread. Then some paracetamol as she said her head hurt. Vomited later.

The AB is 12 hourly and her first /only dose was around 12.00

Cripes maybe it is the AB.

No it has to be full dose and finish bottle but there are alternatives that are easier on the stomach if you ask.

An appetite is a good sign but she really needs 48 hrs of full dose to really perk up. Honestly call them you could pick it up if the OOH prepares you something tonight

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/06/2010 23:32

Yogurt isn't a good idea.

Start off with water, if she's able to keep this down then toast. The antibiotics need changing though. You can call the OOH for a different prescription as grape suggests.

mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:37

hmm, thanks,

am not in uk so not sure what I have to do to change the prescription (without taking her back to bloody docs.)

We do have a good 24hr health centre here but doubt if I can get her off the sofa to go there tonight and not sure if they would change the AB's without seeing her.

Will go and see if there's a phone number.

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/06/2010 23:39

Phone them up, just tell them she has been given x-antibiotics for an ear infection and started vomiting shortly after taking the first dose, is it possible for you to get hold of a prescription for something else? They may not have to see her, it depends on their policy though.

beammeupscotty · 25/06/2010 23:42

Some antibiotics need to be taken 1 hour before food, check bottle?
If it stays down an hour most of it should be absorbed. Persivere (cant spell that!) anything is better than nothing. If not GP again, may be can have ear drops with abx?

Undutchable · 25/06/2010 23:43

Is it erythromycin, or similar? Has always made me puke and is well known for it. I ask for something else as there's nothing I can do to prevent it.

mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:44

yep, right I have found the 24 hour number for the health service.

She didn't start vomiting until about 5 to 6 hours after the first dose of AB's - though she did have a bad headache after a few hours, then was hungry, then ate, then vomited.

Bugger.

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/06/2010 23:46

What antibiotic is it?

mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:52

tis Procef (tradename?), Cefprozil it says underneath the trade name.

Hang on will tell you the active ingredient..or whatever it's called.

OP posts:
mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:53

Active substance: Cefprozil.

OP posts:
mumonthenet · 25/06/2010 23:55

says the most common side effects are gastro - d and v. Of course, they would be wouldn't they?

It says to take it "independently of meals" what ever that means. I thought she was supposed to take it after a meal.

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/06/2010 23:58

It means don't take it with food. Some of them need an empty stomach to work.

She could do with having it changed, sorry. Give the OOH a call and see what they say.

mumonthenet · 26/06/2010 00:01

Ok,

am off to call them.

Thanks.

I hope they sort something out and she's feeling better soon.

mumonthenet · 26/06/2010 16:22

So, I think we might be seeing an improvement as of now...dd has just had several drops of flat coke and two fingers of toast. That's all she's had since yesterday evening.

I spoke to Health24 for 30 mins last night, they couldn't be sure if it was the AB's or something else so (understandably) told me to go to A&E. I decided not to, but we went at 8 this morning after she was sick again with nothing in her stomach but Brufen and water.

Now have new AB's - the first dose she vomited (lunchtime) but has now kept down the flat coke...and hopefully the toast. So I will try to AB again later. She is now wandering about the house looking pained and clutching a sick bowl...so that in itself is an improvement. Gaad.

Thanks for support!

I hope she's on the mend soon. I'm pleased she has new medication, hopefully this will do the trick.
