Swimming Advice After Adenoidectomy

Hi there

Can anyone help? My 5 yr old son has just had grommets fitted and an adenoidectomy, all went well - in fact you wouldn't know that he has had an op yet (early days - had op 2 days ago).

The thing is he loves swimming and although I will be able to steer him away from the local pool, I really want him to be able to join in with the fun when we are camping in France this August. To add to problem, he can swim without armbands and insists on doing so, but strangely only under water.

Has anyone had any success with earplugs, ones to avoid etc, I have seen head bands and all sorts to help keep plugs in place but would like some experienced (meaning other mums) advice before I purchase.

Thanks

Jo

My DS had grommets done when he was 3, and the drs advice was to take him to a place that does hearing aids. They made him custom fitted ear plugs - he got to choose the colour!- and they were fantastic. Didn't let a drop of water in and lasted almost a year. I don't live in the UK but am sure you can find a place that does them over there.

No band or swimming hat needed, either, as they fitted right into his ear and then covered the whole inside part of the outer ear (iykwim).

Thanks Geocentric, that sounds promising I will look into it.

For my dd (5) I have used the ones that mould into the ear cavity a bit like plasticine. I can't remember what they were called though...They came from Boots. They have always worked fine with either a swimming hat over the top or ear band. It is ok for children with grommets to go underwater, according to our consultant, just not so deep that the pressure builds up. He said if they are in water that they can stand in then it should be fine.

Thanks for that, I did find some in boots that look almost like plastic screws, the moulded ones sound better, I think it will be a combination of those and a funky ear band that he chooses.

Thanks for the advice, Jo

DS is deaf and has grommets, he has the sort they make at the hospital, you have to pay for them but they last a while. As he needs to avoid infection we take a belt and braces approach, swim moulds with headband and swim hat on top.
