hayfever treatment for children?

I think DD(5) may have mild hayfever symptoms. I say mild because she isn't sneezing, doesn't have red eyes but she does have a runny nose and says her eyes hurt - and she keeps telling me she doesn't feel well, pretty much every night. She can't describe her symptoms but tonight I told her I think she may have hayfever, explained what it is and she seemed happier.

Have read up a bit and they don't seem to recommend medication for a child, especially if symptoms are not severe. One tip was putting vaseline in the nostrils, which she may let me do. Also washing hair at night.

Are there any other ideas/tips? I have never had hayfever but the pollen count is high and even I am feeling slightly uncomfortable - so it must be hard for someone who is sensitive to it.

Piriton will help as antihistimine

i'd take her to the docs if she feels bad

and get eye drops as well as antihistimines.

Thank you. I will pop into the chemists and get some piriton and eyedrops if they have any suitable for children.

(Not that it affects OP's DD, but Piriton is 1yr+. I discovered this when I went to buy a bottle for DD, the woman asked when her birthday was and I replied 'Oh, next week' and she told me to come back the following week to buy the stuff because she couldn't sell it to me if DD was under 1!!)

Ahhh, sorry Pixie, and thanks for that. I am always completely clueless about medications! DD was having Calpol before her due date for her 8 and 12 week immunisations (on doctor's advice), and I always have to decide whether to use actual or corrected age for meds! I tend to err on the side of caution, so still haven't given her Piriton as, while she's 14 months, she wasn't due till mid-July! Am seeing a paediatrician today though so will get them to ok it.

Yeah - not helped by the fact she's little for her age! Of course, I just realised, looking at this thread, that I forgot to ask the paed about Piriton! I may just give her some later and see what happens. I always tend to err on the small side for doses anyway.
