School Making DD1 use a 'special' pencil

because I reported that DD2 has threadworms.

From reading old post's here & reading patient.co.uk etc, it seems the worms lay their eggs at night time. The advice is to treat with OVEX, then wash bums first thing in the morning to remove any eggs that may have been laid. Then use seperate towels to dry each memeber of the family & then wash the towels.

Isn't it a bit over the top that DD1 has been told to only use this pencil ?

Shock

Is it because children are more likely to scratch their bottoms and spread them around?

Lakota · 17/06/2010 19:52

Is it a special bottom scratching pencil?
Passed down through the ages?
How bizarre.

Hope they clear up soon

thread worms are passed around with fingers. Children scratch their itchy bum, then don't wash their hands properly and leave threadworm eggs all over everything they touch.

edam · 17/06/2010 19:55

and suck the end of their pencils, transferring the threadworms? eek.

thisisyesterday · 17/06/2010 19:56

hmm i dunno, it's probably a good idea tbh

when ds1 had them i told the school and his teacher said "ooooh i won't make a fresh lot of playdough then" lol

it's spread really quite easily, and as small children aren't great at washing hands/not touching their bum then I think it's a good idea to limit what they touch in the classroom

lovingthesun · 17/06/2010 20:00

well apparently the worms only lay eggs at night, so washing her bum (& her sisters & mine!) first thing, is supposed to remove the eggs. The medicine kills the worms.

She's almost 7 & says she doesn't have an itchy bottom ( & when I checked in the middle of the night with my torch) I only saw 2.

DD2, OTOH, had an army of them, but has been to nursery & used all different kinds of implements....

but according to advice, as I've washed their bums & therefore washed away the eggs laid the previous night, then dried them with fresh towels, there will be no eggs to spread ?

Poor DD1, her friends keep asking her why she has to use the pencil.

Also, are the school assuming that this pencil is the only thing she touches each day? ie no door handles, not the fruit box etc.

yes you're right, one 'naughty' girl was cross that DD1 had this pencil, so grabbed it & put it in her mouth

I think I'll take her off school tomorrow...

Thanks all.

It seems like a reasonable precaution to me, but they need to make sure your DD isn't targeted because of it. I think taking her out of school is an over-reaction though.

I am confused as to why you reported that DD2 has threadworms when clearly DD1 has them too. just seeing 2 worms doesn't mean she has escaped it.

Have you all taken the tablets?

lovingthesun · 17/06/2010 20:30

because when I reported it, only DD2 had them. The whole family has had the medicine, no tablets, just a single 5ml of Ovex.
