Blood in nappy

HumphreyCobbler · 17/06/2010 14:06

3.6 year old ds has got a bug that is giving him frequent and loose poo. He had blood and jelly stuff in his nappy this morning.

I wasn't that worried before as DD had the same thing last week and a friend who was a nurse said that as long as they were ok in themselves it wasn't something to worry about.

Although DS is not complaining of any pain, he is totally unhappy and won't let me put him down for two minutes.

I just checked on NHS direct and it said to take him to A&E! Seems a bit too dramatic to me, but am I being a bit negligent in not taking him to the doctor?

jelly mucousy stuff means an inflamed bowel (but duh!, it's not like you didn't know that!)

blood more worrying - what type, how much, etc is what would be the deciding factor for me wrt A&E

could it be small amount form going so often? eg sore, raw bottom? or do you think blood is more "internal"?

HumphreyCobbler · 17/06/2010 14:10

this it is internal (all mixed up, TMI)

it was just twice this morning, he hasn't actually had another poo since

It wasn't that much

hmmm, if internal I'd be more inclined ot get it checked out, tbh.

you say he is feeling rotten and won't let you put him down - how usual a reaction is that? sounds quite extreme to me, from a 3.6 year old (mine are 5 and 3, and when they get ill they do like a cuddle, but it's only been the more serious ones where they won't let me move at all - eg dd2 with chicken pox)

did your dd have themucous/blood too? or "just" the runs?

HumphreyCobbler · 17/06/2010 14:15

dd had the blood too

OK, will phone up the doctor

Having said all that, he is eating an apple now

oh, and you can't gross me out with TMI re poo- have a dh who has had bowel disease, a step son with chronic constipation, dd1 is ASD and has gut issues - I have seen far more gross poo than I ever wanted to

my DD4 had a lot of blood in her poo when she was just over 1yo. I took her to the gp who said it was "normal" (it looked like she was having a periode every time I was changing her). I insisted on him taking a sample of her stool which he halfheartedly did. After a week with no news fom GP and no change in the situation I called him. He said she had a "campylobacter" sp? due too probably food poisonning (discovered later that it had been transmitted by our cockateil.

I have got to say DD was in terrible pain as well so might be a different thing.

hope you get through to doc ok

HumphreyCobbler · 17/06/2010 14:28

thanks guys
am waiting for them to call me back

he seems a lot perkier now, typical

lol at gross poo issues - I remember before I had children I was listening to my dsis talk about the colour of her baby's poo and I thought her obsession with it VERY odd I now write about my child's poo on an internet forum...
