DS (14mths) has had awful mouth infection, dr thought tonsillitis but after 5 days Antibiotics not much better so going back today.

Not been able to clean his teeth properly since Thursday. Normally cleaned 2x per day, last thing at night, and rarely night time drinks now.

He now has horrible white spots on his gums so cleaning impossible as he clamps teeth together.

Now his gums are red and when I brush are bleeding. One of his molars which is coming through looked like it had a dark area on it (had to tickle him to make him open his mouth long enough to see).

Have I ruined his teeth? I didn't want to make him hate having them brushed due to pain and put him off forever and seem to have wrecked them anyway. So worried and guilty.

Any advice?

I meant to say I cleaned the dark area with lots of screaming and shouting and seems not to be dark, suspect food lodged from lunch, but did bleed.

has had some penicillin-type in last 3 or 4 months, and is now on Erythromycin. Have been prescribed Nystan as dr thinks could be thrush. Thought white patches were tonsilitis (dr said if he had been older it would have been... are they not yet developed?).
Blister/spots on tongue at front, as big and white as a tooth. Have got smaller and more grey. now spots on gums. has red sores/blister on lips and cheeks (external).

He has just had a bite of some toast and it made his gums bleed.

it sounds more like oral thrush to me as tonsilitis is normal on the tonsil area only.Does the white stuff look a bit like curds and when it comes off the area is it red underneath

What you are describing sounds exactly like he has primary herpes infection which is VERY common in young children and hardly ever recognised my doctors! I am a dentist and have seen many cases.

Good news is that it will get better on its own and the worst is about day 4/5. Give it another few days and it should go.

Its caused by the same virus that causes cold sores and this infection happens the 1st time a child comes in contact with the virus. Not all children have the same reaction to it but it is common.

In the mean time all you need to do is give calpol if he seems to be in pain. Don't try to brush his teeth as it will be very sore. His teeth with be ok for a few days without being brushed. Just keep his mouth clean with damp cotton wool.

I hope this reassures you and is helpful.

Sorry that should be BY doctors not MY doctors!

Spoke to SIL who is a GP, I had a cold sore 2 weeks ago... he had a massive temp last week, then all these sores. I did mention it to our GP when he first went in but she thinks likely herpes.

Thank you Eenymeeny!!! I did think that last thurs but when GP dismissed it so did I. Now you and SIL saying same thing does make this likely.

Feel LOTS better.

Thank you all.
