My 20m old appears to be suffering from the same thing my 5yo has - an ibs-type thing with specific intolerances to fat and sorbitol.

She's had a very disturbed gut for a few days now, we think because she's been drinking squash for a couple of weeks when she doesn't usually at all. And the squash has glucose-fructose in.

Anyway, every single bit of food was causing frequent mucousy poos so she's had no food except breastmilk since yesterday morning. Her gut's calmed down in that she pooed a lot yesterday pm, and then nothing until this morning, when she did a poo at her normal time, but it was still runny and mucousy but not followed by lots of little mucousy accidents as they had been the last few days. Nothing else all day so far.

I gave her a rice cake a couple of hours ago as she's at the time of day when bfing her for too long will make her go to sleep, but the poor thing's really hungry.

Would you risk giving her something else bland like that? I've got breadsticks too. Or would you keep her on clear fluids for longer? Until she's done a non-mucousy poo?

TIA

Anyone know how long to leave an irritated gut before offering food again?

I think Id be a bit worried about assuming that the mucus is only caused by the ibs tbh.

I would give her bland food though, definitely.

She's growing fine. There are intolerances in the family - easily identifiable and avoidable ones, thankfully. We're now pretty used to it.

My mum has to check everything out for sorbitol. Fat upsets my tummy when I'm pg or having my period. DD2 gets an upset tummy when she has too much creamy stuff, or too much stuff with sorbitol in. This fits the profile so well. Of course I would get her checked out if it continued, or if she were ill, but she's not. She's really, really well, her poo is not offensive at all - less smelly, even, than normal poo, so def. not an infection.

As soon as we stop DD2 (or me) having the irritant, the symptoms clear up. But I think DD4's tummy has been irritated by too much squash and needs to have time to settle down before I start feeding her again.

No sign of the rice cake I gave her hours ago now, so might offer her another one now. Thank goodness she's still breastfed!
