Blue lump Birthmark on forehead of 8 week old - what should I expect!?

Hello

my newborn has a small hardish purple lump on her forehead which isn't a bruise. It appeared about 2 weeks ago. GP says it's prob a strawberry Nevis and won't get any bigger BUT against my better judgement gave just been googling and freaked myself out.

Anyone with any experience or knowledge of this.

Thanks x

I'd ask to be referred to a dermatologist for a look at it and a good opinion. If its a strawberry naevis, then one laser session will get rid of it for good (friends DD had hers done last week) should you so wish.

If nothing else, it'll put your mind at rest

bump

I had a strawberry nevis on my arm, my Mum always called it my "pretty mark". She always promised it would be gone by the age of 7. It did fade tremendously, only a few red "threads" I'd describe them as now remain. I wouldn't rush into having something done until DD is older and you see whether it regresses spontaneously - BUT as it's on her face I can see why you might want to get something done earlier... I speak as the mum of a baby with a cleft, so do understand the worries of having something noticeably different on your LO's face. However, if it were up to me, I wouldn't be having LO's cleft repaired if it weren't entirely necessary because I think he's gorgeous just the way he is.

Anyway, jumping the gun here - you need to find out for definite that that is what it is.

Hi,

My little boy has one of these, his came up when he was ten days old he is now 4 and its only just started to shrink, the doctors don't like to do anything as there are so many blood vessels it can be hard to stem the bleeding if they try to remove it, they like to just leave them as they do go, can take a few years but they do go, two of my friends babies had them oone on their shoulder and the other on their eye lid and now you would not know they had been there... They are more of an issue to us parents than the kids.. And as a doctor told me recently " Mummy don't google you scare yourself and don't have the medical background to make a rational decision" SO SO TRUE....

My DH had one of these on his face as a baby/toddler. My MIL says it did get bigger and I have seen a photo and it looked quite big, it started to shrink when he was about 4 and totally gone soon after.

Thanks all - went to see a dermatologist and it is a deep haemangioma (like a strawberry nevis but under the skin). It most likely will get bigger but has no other serious complications, and will go after a few years. I just think it's a case of getting my head around society's expectations of perfection. My DD is gorgeous with or without her funny bump! I know it's pathetic but I just felt so self conscious about it. Thanks for posts.

Don't even get me started on society's expectations of perfection!!!

Glad you got reassurance from the dermatologist - your LO will be gorgeous with it and without it when it fades!
