He is 9 and has been off school today because of the temperature last night. He's been a little 'floppy' but otherwise fine, eating and drinking, cheerful etc. I was thinking he could probably go back to school tomorrow. However about 6pm he went to bed saying he felt worse and his temperature climbed rapidly to 39.7. He was also complaining of pain when he moves his eyes, a slight sore throat and stabbing pains in his hands and feet. His temperature has come down now but his pillow is soaking where he has sweated so much.

I am willing to bet that he'll bounce out of bed and spend the day basically fine, then the same thing will happen tomorrow night. Is this a common pattern? He is so rarely ill that I can't remember the last time he had a temperature!

It is completely normal for a temperature to rise at around 6.00pm, you could have set the clock by me doing that as a child, and my dc are exactly the same when they have a virus.

Eye sensitivity is also common with temps so thst could explain that. Not sure about the stabbing pains in hands and feet though.

It worried me a bit because leg pains can be an early meningitis symptom. But he's got no neck stiffness, is talking normally, no vomiting, so I think it's OK. Going to keep an eye on him through the night though. Am a bit more wary as his teacher died two years ago of meningitis which came on very gradually, just like a sore throat bug.

Keep an eye out for a rash then, have you got a torch so you can check his body without waking him in the night?

Yes can do that. I think he's fine though - just checked him and temp down to 37, leg pains gone.

OK - so he was fine all day Wed and no temp last night. Went back to school perfectly happily. Met him from school and he was GREEN. Staggered to car saying his chest hurt. Could hardly speak on way home. Sat in loo for a while when we got home and colour got better but he's still pale. Now feeling better but very quiet, says he feels cold and doesn't want food.

So what is going on do you think?
