hi

probably a stupid question really but my 19month old DS had a really high temperature this afternoon. some calpol seemed to sort it out and he managed some dinner. i gave him some more calpol (10mls) at 7pm (3pm was the last dose) and he has just been really sick with everything coming up. is it ok for me to give him some more calpol? his temperature is high again and his breathing is quite rapid.

any advise?

thanks all

Can you give him some childrens ibuprofen instead? It's alot better at bringing a temperature down. The rapid breathing is normal if he has a fever, just make sure he's not struggling to breathe. Unless he was sick right away at 7pm when he had the dose I wouldn't give him any more calpol.

no don't give him any more calpol.

10mls ???? isn't that enough for an 8 yr old?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 08/06/2010 21:34

Bloody hell I missed that piratecat!

How much calpol have you given your child exactly?

Galena · 08/06/2010 21:36

Piratecat, I think it depends on whether it's infant calpol or 6plus calpol?

DanJARMouse · 08/06/2010 21:38

isnt infant calpol 1-2 5ml spoons every 4-6hrs?

But re OP - No, do not give any more calpol.

If he is poorly enough for you to be worried, call the Out of Hours docs

soniaweir · 08/06/2010 21:39

it's infant calpol and says you can give up to 10mls every 4 hours, guess i will have to wait until 11pm to give it to him. I hope that is the last of the sickness though.

thanks for your advise!

you can give him childrens ibuprofen if you have any, wash him down with a damp flannel aswell. I know this sounds mean but try not to cuddle him as this will make him hotter. He does need checking over unless he has a cold. If you have a fan then you can use this aswell, just make sure it rotates and blows over him rather then points straight at him IYSWIM.

Sidge · 08/06/2010 21:47

Don't give him any more Calpol as you don't know how much he's absorbed, and you gave him the upper dose limit for his age.

I would be tempted to call the Out of Hours docs - a 19 month old with vomiting, high temperature and high respiratory rate is a poorly baby and needs checking over.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/06/2010 21:55

I'd ring your ooh Drs.

Get an accurate temperature and respiratory rate (breaths per minute) before you phone.

BTW, it says every 4 hours, but isn't it up to 4 times a day maximum?

That sounds a lot of calpol for a 19 month old.

Hope he's better son.

thanks all for your advice, managed to stay up until 11pm to give him some more and he seems much better this morning although has gone back to bed for a morning nap which is unlike him.

must have been a little bug.

thanks again!
