Anal Fissures - anybody know about treatments?

My 2 year old DS has been struggling to get his poos out recently. I took him to the doctors yesterday and found he has a superficial anal fissure. Apparently this makes it uncomfortable to pass stools so he's leaving it until he's built up a large quantity of poo and this is making it worse.

He's been prescribed Movicol paediatric which seems to be causing poos to be quite runny, and he's still straining frequently. My questions are...

  1. What consistency of poo should I be aiming for? Chicken Korma? Tomato puree?
  2. How long will it take to heal?
  3. Should I do anything else - savlon, extra fibre in his food, more drinks etc.?

Sorry if TMI, but to be fair you did click on a thread titled 'anal fissures'!!!!!

Thankyou!

My DS1 hasn't had a fissure but does have constipation. what can happen with constipated children is that they can have seepage of liquid poo but also still have hard poo inside so that may be why DS is still straing. The bowel can stretch and and this is why you get this leakage. I would keep up at the dose of Movicol you currently are using and see how it goes, it will take weeks (at least) to get him to have a good regular bowel habit. (sorry if TMI but you did start a thread called anal fissure )

I would say getting him to drink more will be a big help too .

hopefully someone who knows about fissure will be along son.

Thanks!

He's just done a solid poo so hopefully that has cleared him out a bit. But it's early days so I'll keep on with the movicol until I see an improvement.

Any other advice?

Anal fissures are small cuts in the lining of the rectum or the anus. Because it is mucous membrane, (same as in mouth) they heal quickly, but are often delayed as they cant be left in peace as poo comes down on a daily basis! Keep poo nice and soft, (not runny, more like a cow pat (you did ask)) It was probably a hard poo that tore the lining in the first place. Lots of fluid, fruit, high fibre cereals etc.
If still having problems after a week go back to GP. There are suppositories to coat the area, but try not to let your DS get into the pattern of witholding because it hurts. That is a nightmare
