3 year old with more molars than he's meant to have?!?!

I was slightly shocked to check DS2's teeth and find that in addition to his full set of 20 milk teeth they all get, he has also got 2 new molars punching through the gums at the top, behind his current back molars. He is 3 yrs and 1 month old!

I don't think this is normal and will take him to dentist (god forbid that visit), but wondered if anyone knows anything about this?

I am hoping it's just his adult teeth, coming VERY early!

DS1 has 20 teeth.

Thanks

i am sure they do get some adult molars at this sort of time, even if your son's are early!

I do recall looking in dd's mouth at about aged4 ish, after dentist said' oh look she has her adult molars' I was shocked, as they'd just crept in without us noticing!! he will lose all the ones he doesn't need, and those molars will become part of his adult 'set'.

Adult molars don't some in until about 6yrs old. It is a average, but at 3, he would be very early.

Always worth getting it checked out, for peace of mind. It won't do any harm, just make sure they are well looked after!

My dd1 got what we thought were her first adult teeth just before she was five, but it turned out she already had four adult molars at the back. We have no idea when they came through!

Make sure you brush them properly!

Thanks for this.

Yes, we will have to brush extra vigilantly!

Will ask dentist, who might recommended upping his toothpaste to one with higher fluoride content.

I can just hear him bragging 'I'm only 3 but I've got my adult teeth already' : )

OK, this is nuts! Now his 2 very-back bottom gums are all really raised and swollen, so I reckon the bottom adult molars are about to erupt too!

Have booked dental appointment......
