Chickenpox near the eye

Ds has chickenpox. A lot of spots, though he's not particularly poorly except for the occasional earache. But he's got a spot developing on the inside of his lower eyelid, the edge where you would put eyeliner if you were drawing it inside the eye IYSWIM. Do I need to worry?

No. DS1 had spots inside the eye (and inside the nose, the ear, the mouth..... ). He has now a very tiny chickenpox scar where you describe it.

If chicken pox goes inside the eyelid then he should be seen by the GP.

DS had one there too when he has chicken pox a few weeks ago. I was really worried about it but it didn't seem to bother him at all and it healed up fine.

Netdoctor says to see GP if it's inside the eyelid. Probably just so they can see if there's an infection developing.

DD's had them in the corners of her eyes, but I can't remember if there were any inside the eyelid.

I think it's because the virus can attack the nerves in the eye, which you obviously want to avoid.

The eye ball is part of the brain.

From what other posters say this obviously doesn't happen all the time and the eye can heal up fine; but please take him to the GP.

We did see a doctor about it, and were given some medicine to help with the itching, but that was to help generally, not just with the eye.
Better safe than sorry, I guess.

Thanks for replying so quickly. Netdoctor seems to imply that it's a concern if the blisters are actually in contactwith the surface of the eye, rather than just near it. So I shall delay worrying for the time being.

Poor little lovey cried over something this evening and the tears stung his eye because of the spot. But of course the stinging made him cry more. Vicious circle.

Sometimes blisters are in contact with the eye and even cause ulcers on the cornea (white bit) They can scar like any other chickenpox blister on the body and cause corneal scarring and damage to vision in that part of the eye. Needs treating if this occurs to prevent this scarring. Look out for signs of irritation and conjunctivitis.
Patient UK, and NHS choices give all info on treating symptoms, poor mite!
