My dd has had fever for couple of days, nothing major, about 38 max. Last week she was chesty and had a cold but this has tailed off, so am assuming this is something different. Took to drs yest, gave thorough going over, couldn't see anything obvious, Said to keep giving calpol. Since last night fever has been peaking just under 39. She is ok in herself but Its taking both calpol and nurofen to bring it down. With bank hol coming do you think I should take her back this arvo (can easily get app) or just sit it out as dr checked her over? She is only 12m old which is why I get concerned but she's eating, drinking etc. Could be teeth dr said.

If the fever goes even slightly over 39C take her to A&E as the surgery will be closed. When DT1 developed a fever during bank holiday weekend last year, he was couple of months older than your DD. We were told to do that by one of the leading peadi consultants in Oxon.

I would take her this pm, better safe than sorry, and 39 is pretty high, especially as needing both analgesics to bring it down. May only be a virus, but at least the gp can listento chest, look in ears etc.
Good luck.

Risking the wrath of rollmops here but most doctors will tell you that the height of a temp does not really tell you anything, it's the child's behaviour that you should watch. A cold or flu can result in a temp of 40 degrees while something more serious may not run a fever that high. . If your dd seems happy enough in herself then she's coping fine. If she becomes floppy, lethargic or Her behaviour starts to worry you then a&e is the best plan over the bank holiday. Hope she feels better soon.

Risking further wrath here too but based on another thread new advice from docs seems to be that you should allow the body's defense system (ie the temperature) to do it's thing as long as the child is comfortable/ happy. I believe there has been some research showing that treating slight temps can prolong illnesses because you're inhibiting the body's ability to fight the bug. Removing the temp does not remove what's causing the illness!

I hope your dd feels better soon.

Bubble - you are an 'iron mummy' after my own heart.

The maxim is 'look at the patient not the machines' (or thermometer in this case) !

Only worry about a temp if

a) the child is unwell (or very young)
b) cannot be controlled with ibuprofen or paracetamol
c) goes on for longer the 5 days
d) Your instinct is screaming that's something wrong!

Simple common sense really
