4 year old keeps messing pants, without realising it - food allergy/intolerance??

My DD is 4.10 and for a few weeks she's been messing her pants, but genuinely doesn't realise. It's not loads, more of a large 'skid mark' but it's necessitating changing her knickers several times a day.

Both I and her pre-school staff are convinced that she genuinely doesn't realise it's happening as she seems so shocked each time to see it when she goes to the loo for a wee.

I've taken her to GP for a stool sample, which came back fine. She's suggested it could possibly be a food allergy or intolerance upsetting her tummy. Does anyone have any experience/ideas? I'd really rather not subject her to blood tests if we can avoid it.

Keep a food diary. It helps identify a pattern, and then you can eliminate the food. DS is dairy allergic/intolerant (his Gastro Consultant says allergic) but recently had an episode of vomiting continuously and it was getting to the point of him having to go back to Children's Hospital for an admission, but spoke to his dietician, and she asked what he had been eating over recent days, and turned out to be a soya allergy. So, we eliminated it from his diet, and he's great! Actually, he is slightly hyper now, and climbs/runs/jumps constantly, so we're thinking of adding a bit of soya back . Just kidding lest anyone identifies me and sends in social services...

Thanks so much both of you. I've been doing some research (google ) and I'm now wondering about the impaction. Her bowel movements are pretty sporadic so it could possibly be that. I have another GP appointment for her next week so I'll talk to her about it then.

Thank you
