I am thinking about trying fissure sealant for DS1, who will be 7 next month. Would you please share your experience. Does it work?

My dd had it done when we lived in Bangkok, the cost was about 40p per tooth sealed. She has fantastic teeth but that may be a combination of sealant and fluoride drops. Since we moved to Switzerland, the dentist pointed out that doing first teeth is a waste of money but happily did her second ones. IMVHO, anything that prevents her getting cavities is worth it.

I have this on my teeth and possibly as a result I have no fillings as of yet (but I'm only 23) on my adult teeth (even though I didn't take that good care of them). I have had it redone since I was a child though.

Thank you for your replies. We brush very carefully, but sometimes it is difficult to get rid of food (cereals , dried fruit). I agree with you Kreecher.....s, I don't think it is a waste of money on milk teeth, as you keep your molar for quite a long time, and in case a very deep cavity you need to face an extraction.
Thanks again, I'll go for it!

ds(8) has one done, had it on NHS

beammeupscotty · 27/05/2010 21:34

Both my children had this done at around that age, dont think it was free but not madly expensive. They never had any fillings till they were adults and then only one each. Def worth it.

I generally get this done for my children, but the dentist advised against it for one of my children. He even remarked that he was giving up a £60 fee. That child had very flat molars, so no deep crevices. The sealants wouldn't have done any good, but any threatment has its risks so not worth it overall.

That's what the dentist told me on the phone; we will see if it's necessary. Now reading your post MmeT, I understand his reply

i had it and don't have a single decay aged 36.... so I think it was worth it

moaningminniewhingesagain · 30/05/2010 21:01

I had it done as a child, on NHS. I'm nearly 34 and no fillings yet so I would go for it.

My DS had it done last year when he was nearly six. He got his adult teeth really early, (he was only four when he lost his front teeth)The dentist said as he had them so young it was a good idea to protect them. It took about 5 to 10 mins a tooth, he had all four molars done in 2 different session, just because it was a long time to have your mouth open when you are little. I can't see any risks with the procedure, they just cleaned his teeth as normal and then painted the filler on. The dentist said the filler would eventually wear down, but we could do it again he we wanted when that happened. He had it done free on the NHS! Will be doing it for my other dc when their adult molars are through.

I had it when i was a child and I have one filling and am 34 - I think is worth it!

gordonpym · 01/06/2010 12:07

I will do it, and if my dentist doesn't want to, I'll go to another one. We are booked for July (!).

I've got it on my molars (and they ocassionally get replaced if they fall off. The more modern ones stay on better IME).

I'm in my early 30s.

I have NO fillings.

FanjolinaJolie · 01/06/2010 19:12

I had it done as a child in NZ.

I am 36 and have never had one cavity.

LIZS · 01/06/2010 19:17

ds(12) has had his done but dd couldn't keep her mouth wide enough for the length of time required . Will probably try again next time - she's almost 9.
