hi. dd (2) has 5mm skelf stuck in her finger. it's right in with no edge sticking out to get a grip on and try and pull it out with.
will it come out itself? it happened on sat. its not giving her pain.

spelk darling

you should have got it out by now I would think

dont think it will come out by itself tbh

whomovedmychocolate · 24/05/2010 21:59

What is a 'skelf'

iamfabregasted · 24/05/2010 22:02

A skelf is a small piece of wood or thorn, usually. Very tiny.

I would recommend some magnesium sulphate - you can get it from the chemist, but if I remember right I got some from Tescos as well

Slabber (another good word for you WMMC) and stick a plaster over it, hopefully should be out overnight.

jkklpu · 24/05/2010 22:02

It might come out itself but unlikely for several days. Soak in a mug of as hot water as she can bear with some salt in it, as another MNetter suggested in the past some washing-up liquid to make the splinter expand and stick out. After about 10 minutes, try to squeeze the end out and remove with tweezers. You can also sterilise a needle and try to extract from the warm, puffed-up skin after the soaking.

Poor wee thing! Skelfs are horrible.
Try gently push it up and out, it may take a while then tweezers, you might have to break the skin a bit if it is deep.
As Trinity said - Not sure they come out by themselves.
My gran used to suck them out, not sure how that works though tbh.

BibiThree · 24/05/2010 22:06

Splinter surely? Agree with mag sulph paste, will draw it out.

JackBauer · 24/05/2010 22:07

Do you mean a splinter?

DramaInPyjamas · 24/05/2010 22:08

Yep. Not a spelk! It's a skelf in Scotland!!

TrinityMeemaRhino · 24/05/2010 22:09

I'M in scotland
ITS A SPELK

you're gonna have to hold her down and pick it out with a needle

whomovedmychocolate · 24/05/2010 22:16

God you Scots have appalling spelling.

S P L I N T E R

Seona1973 · 24/05/2010 22:20

never heard of a spelk!! It is a skelf, so there!

Seona1973 · 24/05/2010 22:22

p.s. I used a needle to get to ds's - he watched with great curiosity

whomovedmychocolate · 24/05/2010 22:22

Oh no, disagreement among you - is it a splinter / skelf / spelk movement thorn in your side?

MsHighwater · 24/05/2010 22:24

1 vote for skelf.

and for a needle to howk it out. Gently (if that's possible).

MummyDoIt · 24/05/2010 22:29

In the north of England where I'm from, it's a spell. I had a much less polite way of describing the one stuck in my thumb for a week!

iamfabregasted · 24/05/2010 23:12

Its a S K E L F

And I vote for magnesium sulphate, much less traumatic than hoking and poking

OnEdge · 24/05/2010 23:17

LOL @ Whomovedmychocolate

Tis a splinter.

Nettiespagetti · 24/05/2010 23:25

Skelf I love that word, no-one down here knows what I'm talking about when I say it!
Never heard of magnesium sulphate remedy I shall store it in my memory of sieve and ask same question when I have that problem

Eeeshaal · 17/09/2013 13:49
