Viral infection, fever and rash.

My two year old son has been ill since Thursday. He's had a headache, stomach ache, snotty nose, high temperature and a rash. His temperature has been between 39 and 40 most days.

I called NHS direct yesterday and was told that it sounded like a classic viral infection but that if he wasn't better today then I should take him to see a doctor. His rash is much worse today but doesn't seem to be bothering him very much. This is also the first day that he's woken up without a temperature and eaten something. He seems pretty happy and I haven't given him any calpol so I suppose he's on the mend.

So, is this what usually happens? Will the rash remain even if he's getting better? Should I forget about booking an appointment since the only real concern now is the rash?

a viral rash disappears after a few days. My kids seem to get the rash at the end.

Don't worry about the appointment unless you are concerned for any other reason. The GP will say viral rash and you'll be on your way!

Glad he is feeling better!

Sometimes, if you take them to be checked over and Doc says all is fine, it just means you can relax and get on without worrying. But it does sound like he is on the mend. when you see the rash it just plays on your mind, I know how you feel.

It might just be a temperature rash they can take a few days to clear. just keep calpol to hand an dhopefully he will be all better soon

Thanks everyone. He seems much happier today so I won't bother with the appointment.
