Anyone know about lactose intolerance?

My dd (5) has been lactose intolerant since weaning. We have learned what she can have/not have and as a result have not had to cut out dairy totally. However have recently discovered she is having normal milk at school and last week she had terrible stomach cramps in evenings, vomiting, runny poo and very bubbly tummy - I could hear it from my bed room! We have cut out dairy for a few days to let her tummy settle, but she is still off her food a bit, still a bit runny and is burping a lot. Any idea how long her insides will take to settle?

both my sons where lactose intolerant as babies although they both are not now 1 is 18 and the other 9 have you talked to you doctor about what is happening to your daughter maybe she isnt lactose intollerant but is allergic to some food stuffs my eldest son is alergic to wheat and some other foods not connected to dairy I am peanut intolerant so my sons have varied reactions maybe it would be best to get her tested for allergies or you could go the route that i did and slowly introduce dairy into her diet in small quantities and see what happens but I think a trip to the doctors may be best just to get her checked out for allergies.

You need to talk to her school and see what alternative they can provide. Could she bring some other milk (soy, rice, almond) herself or are they obliged to provide a non-dairy alternative for her to drink?

You should also go to an allergist, who will be able to advise you on lactose intolerance besides checking for any allergies there might be.

All my DCs have lactose intolerance, and DS recently was diagnosed with corn, soy and peanut allergies. They can all tolerate yogurt now, but as babies and young children all dairy had bad results.

I was wondering if you have ever had your dd tested for Coeliac Disease? The doctor can do a blood test. My youngest used to have stomach cramps, runny poo and bubbly tummy and was eventually diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. Lactose Intolerance is a common symptom of untreated Coeliac Disease but usually improves when after going on the gluten free diet. It's important not to cut wheat if you plan to have the test.

Is your DD under a paediatrician? DS2 is 6 and was lactose intolerant from being a baby, but seems to have grown out of it now. We were guided by the paediatrician and dietician at the hospital, to begin with he had to cut everything out then when he was about 4 they started to reintroduce things slowly. It took just over a year before we reintroduced milk itself (started with yoghurt, hard cheese etc).

His symptoms were exactly as you described if he had milk when he was younger.

He was tested for coeliacs amongst other things, just to rule it out.

His school were great, he had soya milk and they made him special dairy free school dinners.
