Childrens Eye Tests (5 yo) Question

Hullo

My DD1 nearly 5 years old complains of "fizzy" eyes and has started saying that she couldn't see a slug clearly...she got right up to it.

So we are going to book into an optitions for an eye test. Has anyone done this? Can you quickly tell me what to expect so I can prepare her a bit please?

Or should I via the GP first?

I've looked at NHS Direct but got a bit lost in all the information.

Opticians are usually very good with small children and the best place to start with eye problems. They'll assess her vision with 'looking games' - pictures, letters, symbols. There will be some covering up of alternate eyes... something you can practice at home, perhaps. It's all very non-invasive and much more fun than the doctor's

If they think the 'fizziness' needs medical attention rather than corrective treatment then they'll refer you accordingly.

Great thank you Chil (and you can spell Opticians too! I was wondering). I was justthinking of the big scary chair and the nighmarish lense contraption thing...

Oh totally agree with Chil, the optician's is loads of fun.

Ds2 loves getting his eyes tested (and he's not the most tolerant child...)

I wouldn't worry about preparing her at home - I'd be amazed if she didn't enjoy it!

Best of luck.

DD1 is very quiet/silent in new situations (selective mutism) so one of the things we do is try to prepare her for anything new.

God it would be nice if she enjoys it! Thanks OliviaCrumble.

Peppa Pig goes to the optician in one of her stories. My daughter was really excited to be getting the big glasses like Peppa to wear.
If there is a prob they may well put eye drops in, I really wished I had taken her panda (fav toy) for her to cuddle whilst it was being done. However the bribe of McDonalds for tea worked well too.
Good luck and if there is a prob try not to worry. I was briefly devastated that my little girl needed glasses but now it is just part of her. She even goes to sleep in them every night!!!
