Hello

My 5 year old son seems to pick up eveything going round and also gets tonsillitis quite often as he has large tonsills that may need removing so I've been told. . .

Anyway, on Sunday he complained of a headache which I thought was quite strange as anytime he's been ill before he's never mentioned a headache. Monday he seemed fine, went to school, but came home off his food and really really tired.
Since Monday night he's had a high temperature and hardly eat anything.
Took him to the docs Tuesday who said his glands are up in his neck and that it was just a virus so couldn't prescribe him anything. Since then his temperature has been controlled by giving the maximum dose of calpol and nurofen and keeping him stripped off.
Yesterday, his temperature shot up to 40.3c despite keeping up with the medicine, and his headache was really hurting him. Back to docs, was told he now has spots on his tonsills too so they gave him phenoxymethylpenicillin.

So now he has not eat properly since Sunday, had a temperature since Monday (which since yesterday I have not been able to get below 38.6c) and now has sickness and diarrhea (maybe a side effect from the medicine) and is not keeping any of the medicines down :-s

What do I do? So worried

I'm not a medical expert, but think you need to see someone who is. Go back to the doc, get an emergency appointment as he may be dehydrated and need to be put on a drip.

You need to call out the doctor again if his condition has changed since yesterday (vomiting and diarrhoea).... it could be that the medication is inappropriate or it could be that he needs to be hospitalised for treatment and observation

Phone the GP about the D&V or if you can't wait phone NHS direct; try to keep him reasonably hydrated (sips of drinks not gallons at once); keep trying with the meds; keep an eye on him; follow your gut feel.

What exactly are you specifically worried about? that he's getting worse? that he picks up everything going?

Thanks . . . I've rang the docs and they've given him an appointment for this afternoon, I asked if I should keep on with the medicine n they said they can't advise me on that till I've seen the doctor but he's only got 1 dose due before his app. so that's not too bad.
Worried about all the 3 traumaqueen! He's not progressivly worse IYKWIM (not sure thats the right word) but perks up then gets really bad again n each day he's definitely not any better and after 5 days I would have thought he'd have been on the mend by now

He is drinking enough though

Wondering if he did just have a virus in the beginning then got tonsillitis as a sencondary infection type thing?

I'm just the worst worrier when it comes to him :-S

I am too when it comes to my kids, I can barely sleep when they poorly. It's awful to see them like it.

It's good you have appointment later, will give you piece of mind the doc can see how he is today. Is he ok with penacillin? Agree could be the meds. It gives my dd the terrible runs and tummy ache. His tonsils must be sooo sore. How about some ice pops?

Hope you get on ok later.

Thank you I've just rang and cancelled the appointment as he has been fine after his most recent dose of the medicine and at long last his temperature seems to have come down! It's strange cos this is the 3rd time he's had tonsillitis but the sore throat seems to be the symptom that bothers him the least! It was the same when I had it though lol strange.
Yea he is normally ok with it, he's had the yellow amoxycillin before and an orange one too but this one is a bright red one which he hasn't had.

Fingers crossed

Thanks for all your replies I do appreciate it
