There is another painkiller - Ibru something...? You can get it for young children and you alternate between the two. Someone will know what I am going on about - DS2 had them both when he had tonsilitis. Can you get a quicker appointment? If it does get worse I really would ring out of hours for some antibiotics - I had a horrific earache and the pain was far worse than labour! It may be OK but don't underestimate the pain it can cause Poor little thing.

My emergency won't take him unless his temperature hits 39 with calpol, so no sadly, his appointment is for 10 in the morning.

I have got the hot water bottle will get it for him now. Thanks hopefully he will get better soon. My poor little boy has been being sick with the pain too . Doctor on call said that is quite common though and we still need to wait till the morning.

Hmmmm googling suggests they should be given together - maybe someone else knows. Maybe try stopping the calpol and giving childrens ibruprofen

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 20/05/2010 18:01

I found laying my head on a warm towel helped actually now someone has meantioned the hot water bottle. Don't do the olive oil thing, I think that can make it worse.

I got kids ibuprofen is that what you mean. I know how much pain it can cause I had a really bad infection in pg that collapsed my ear tunnel was agony for a month far worse than labor had to be admitted and procedure done.

He has fallen asleep now with the hot water bottle.

you can give them both at the same time if you need to.

tbh most GP's won't do anything for ear infections these days, they tend to work themselves through. I hope that you don't have too bad a night

slushy06 · 20/05/2010 18:05

Thanks ladies will give the ibu when he wakes up now. Hopefully he will recover quickly.

thisisyesterday - do you know if by that you mean you can give both in each of their maximum doses? Or just alternate? I was told at A & E when DS had tonsilitis I could give both but I never knew if they meant swap at each dose, or give max. of both.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 20/05/2010 18:07

I know it's a pain in the backside but I would honestly think about waking him (not now, when he is 'due') to keep him fully dosed and kind of prevent the pain rather than wait until it gets bad then have to wait for painkiller to kick in. After my episode I am probably quite OTT about earaches

slushy06 · 20/05/2010 18:08

I had to give both you can give both at once or alternate I think.

sorry, yes you can give the max dose of each of them at the same time

alternating of course is sometimes better because it means only a 2 hr gap between the doses, whereas if you give the full dose together you then have to wait 4 hours before you can give agian

slushy06 · 20/05/2010 18:14

What is a NHS drop in centre is that like primecare.

Ds temperature has hit 39 with ibuprofen and calpol, No drop in center near(very rural area) and Primecare said no appointments till 11pm and there is apparently a 6 hour wait in a&e.
I guess it is hardly their fault just annoyed that I phoned earlier and they wouldn't give me a appointment. Also on my own so have to drag two kids out in the middle of the night.

slushy, have you stripped him down and given him a cool drink?

if you can get the temp to come down a bit i am sure you;ll be ok til morning.
how does he seem in himself?

marriednotdead · 20/05/2010 20:47

Has he had earache before? My DS has suffered regularly over the years so we've learnt to alternate calpol/ibuprofen every 2 hours so painkiller level never drops too low. Our out of hours service will fax a prescription to a late night chemist of my choice if the duty doctor agrees antibiotics are needed (they always are unfortunately). He still howls and throws up til they kick in though...

marriednotdead · 20/05/2010 20:48

That's without having to take DS to queue to see anyone.

He is stripped down to trousers and eating a lolly. I have to wait longer for doctor to come out, so will run him up myself. He has never had ear ache before.

It is a ENT infection we have got antibiotics. His temp went down to 38 last night and is staying there so that is good. But he seems better in himself he is well enough to grizzle and moan and to laugh when through my tiredness I dropped my drink . Hopefully he wont be ill to long poor ds .

Thanks for all the support and advice it was very helpful .
