suncream for sensitive skin?

Sonilaa · 19/05/2010 08:40

My 3 year old has slight eczema and very sensitive skin.
This year I bought nivea sun kids suncream because the shop did not have the usual cream (nivea light feeling sun lotion). Now he has reacted to it and I have to keep him covered until it clears up.
what sort of sun cream do you use? do you stick to a trusted cream or change it around?

looking forward to suggestions as I was just about to post this question myself.

Last year used Avon Children suncream and my poor dtds had the most horrendous reaction to it.

Hello to all hope I can give you some advice,
My DD8 has very fair skin and has terrible reactions to suncream, it took me ages to discover what was causing her rashes....long story short was advised by a lovely older couple on holiday one year that Waterproof
suncream is the cause of the reaction it blocks pores and then your skin is not able to sweat(as required) to cool down ...
so now we can use any suncream any make just as long as it has no Waterproof ingredient in it
worth a wee go on a small part of skin first just in case.
lso check out what shampoo and bath stuff you use ...mostly all use Sodium Laurel/Laureth Sulphates, which are used as a foaming agent(also used to strip engines of oli and muck and it is in nearly every soap and even in toothpaste,
if your little one and even your own skin reacts try some great stuff from boots called Naked, bath /shower/shampoo etc it is FB...DD15 swears by it as her skin break.
do some googling on Sodium Laurel Sulphates ..horrid stuff(and its in baby bath)
good luck
x

for soap/shampoo I use the weleda stuff, which does not contain paraffin or sodium laurel/laureth sulphates and his skin is fine with it. weleda also makes suncream, but it is very sticky and therefore not good for nursery.

thanks for the waterproof advice, that makes sense!

We even bought Ikea sun lotion non waterproof last year (horrible smell) but it did not cause a reaction, its defo worth have a good old shop around and chech the ingredients on the back of the bottles...some just sneak that waterproof stuff in
another company do some of their products without the horrid stuff, ifoam by soap and glory is lovely, it was actually my DD15 that notice the common ingredient that was irritating her skin(clever teen)

Sonilaa · 19/05/2010 10:45

when I lived in Germany I used to buy sun gel, which does not block the skin. but can*t find any here.

We managed to buy some when we were in spain cost a fortune but better than getting a reaction or burned skin(it was cream not gel)

kateecass · 19/05/2010 10:58

Have this problem with my DS too. I tried P20 on him yesterday and so far no reaction. Hoping it stays that way cos you can put it on in the morning and then you are good for the whole day and it's waterproof.

Weirdly DD, who you have to be careful what you put in bath cos she can get dermatitis, seems fine with all suncream so far.

ellasmum1 · 19/05/2010 11:12

i know alot of people on mumsnet in the past(i looked this up previously in archives) swear by ultrasun-its only once a day like p20(but NOT the sports gel one),or "The sun mousse" which used to be known as bergaderm or proderm.

Sonilaa · 24/05/2010 09:50

I now used Lavera sun cream. skin looks better now but it is still itching a bit.

You can try your gp. I managed to get prescription sunlotion for a medical reason.

Sonilaa · 24/05/2010 14:07

if it does not clear up in a couple of days I will do that.

My 3 year old DS also has mild eczema which now only really flares up with sun cream. Until now I have used E45 sun cream which has been fantastic but I've just discovered it's been discontinued. After some trawling on the net I've found some possible alternatives: Bergaderm, La Roche Posay, Sunsense, GreenPeople amoung others but at around £15 each I'm not sure which to go for. Has anyone, who previously used and was happy with E45, tried any of these products?

8rubberduckies · 24/05/2010 15:15

I have not tried any of the above creams, but we use Jason kids sunscreen www.jason-here it is paraben free and really gentle, lasts ages too, so worth the £12 price tag.

8rubberduckies · 24/05/2010 15:16

oops the link is meant to be here

dinostar · 24/05/2010 15:53

Thanks I might give that a go

StableButDeluded · 26/05/2010 13:32

Hi, I've been using Bergaderm Once (also used to be called Proderm, now called The Sun Mousse)on the whole family since DS now 5 had eczema as a baby...all I can say is it's great, I wouldn't bother with anything else now. It was originally made for people who have eczema and very sensitive skin, so should be ideal.

Unlike normal suncream it isn't at all sticky or greasy. And I mean really NOT AT ALL-once it's rubbed in you wouldn't know you've got sun protection on, your skin just feels normal. It comes in a mousse which is really easy to apply, and it really does last 6 hours, though I would apply it perhaps once again if out all day in the sun.

only problem is I can never find it in the high street, I have to buy it online. Sometimes you see good deals on Ebay, or you can get it from wwww.ifsogo.com for about £13 with free P&P. I don't mind paying that price since it is so much nicer to use than other suncreams AND you're not applying every two hours so it does last a long time.

StableButDeluded · 26/05/2010 13:42

link to The Sun Mousse website

My DD has occasional flair ups of eczema. I use Banana Boat on her, without any problems.

moosky · 30/05/2010 10:41

Similar problem here. Tried loads and have settled on Blue Lizard.
It's made in the US to Australian standards -which are far more rigourous than our European ones.

Kids had no reaction and skin stayed smooth and without any rashes.
You can get Blue Lizard Baby on Amazon UK.

The other one to consider is Invizible Zinc. This is the one that all the Oz kids use and is supposed to be the best.

It's gentle but I wasn't so keen.

If you google both, you'll get a feel for how good they are - MUCH better than anything manufactured in Europe, although expensive.

singersgirl · 30/05/2010 15:46

Sunsense looks as if it's made by Hamilton (which is an Australian brand, very good for sensitive skin.) I think it's trial and error with sunscreen - DS1 reacts to Nivea and Coppertone (different reactions), DS2 to Banana Boat. They are both fine with Ambre Solaire standard creams, and have just got some Ultrasun because of DS2's eczema flare up, which he hasn't reacted to.

Fibonacci · 30/05/2010 21:45

Lavera works for my ds

Alzalz · 05/08/2014 13:17

My son, 1yrs old has severe ezcema, very sensitive skin
We have been advised to use Sunsense sun sensitive
Found in John Lewis, or direct online from sunsense
Hope that helps

Friedbrain · 05/08/2014 14:52

Sunsense

NannyPeach · 05/08/2014 23:21

My 3yo has eczema, which has been a big problem in summer as all suncreams we tried caused it to flare up.

Since we discovered AVEENO moisturising cream and p20 suncream she hasn't had any flare ups and we have it all under control. P20 is quite expensive, but we have found it well worth it.
