bleeding nappy rash :(

DS3 is cutting his back teeth, and as a result has bad nappy rash. Took his nappy off for the bath toniht, and it was bleeding slightly Poor little boy was so upset.

What can I use on it? I only have sudocrem in the house, so put some on him after his bath. Is there anything I can buy over the counter?

Hi, my DS gets bleeding/weeping rashes due to eczema, try putting a bit of aqueous cream along with the sudocrem, also give him lots of nappy-free time to help heal faster! (we use hydrocortisone and epaderm but that's prescription? though if your DS' rash gets bad enough you could see a GP as you don't want it to get infected, we had to give DS antibiotics and antifungal creams once due to infection, it was awful!)
HTH and good luck ?

Pannacotta · 16/05/2010 20:01

I have found that Weleda calendula nappy cream is the best thing for bad nappy rash.
Much better than sudocrem IMO.
Hope it gets better soon...

I think you are best with egg white.

I tried everything before this and all it did was complicate the skin.

You get a raw egg, whisk it up or just apply the white as is, to the area...after cleaning with cooled boiled water with a bit of salt in it, first. Once clean, apply egg white.

Nappy off as much as humanly possible - if young baby, put on a few towels! If mobile, more tricky

Seriously, it forms a false skin to help healing underneath. Worked so quickly on ds2, when his little bottom was bleeding.

Avoid the chemical stuff as it will sting.

ConDemNation · 16/05/2010 20:03

Sorry will explain in the right order!

Ok. Cooled boiled water with salt, on cotton wool (not wipes! ever! with nappy rash)

then pad gently dry with more cotton wool

then leave to air for a minute

then dab on egg white, with fingers or cotton wool

then leave to dry then apply nappy.

HTH!

Oh poor little ds .

Metanium cream is what you need.

And as much time as you can bear with his nappy off.

meep · 16/05/2010 20:11

I have never been brave enough to try egg white (was paranoid after reading a thread about egg allergies) but nappy off time and Metanium cream have worked best for us.

It is horrible having a lo with bad nappy rash - dd1's bottom just had to have poo against it for a nano-second and it would flare up - she would sob as I changed her nappy and scream when her bum first hit the bath - proper pain - proper ploppy tears - it made me cry too.

ConDemNation · 16/05/2010 20:12

Fair enough! I found metanium didn't work, though, whichw as awful as I didn't know about the egg white then..his bot was sore for almost 2 weeks, he was newborn

Only when I did the egg white did it start to heal!

2plus2more · 16/05/2010 20:19

I know how you feel! My daughter has ezcema and when she was little she regularly had a bleeding bottom - not just a little spot of blood either - pouring blood and also weeping due to infection! We did have to use Daktacort (sp?), which is an anti-fungal gel on prescription, as well as hydrocortisone creams. The best over the counter thing we got though (on advice from my Brother in Law who's a GP) was Metanium. It absolutely stinks and is a bit like yellow cement, but it really works. As soon as we got it, we binned the sudocrem and never went back.

Egg white? Now there is something I've never heard of using! Will give that a try I suppose.

He is 17 months, so he will just be running around with no nappy on. Not sure how I'll get him to sit still long enough for the egg white to dry.

ConDemNation · 17/05/2010 06:54

It should stick to him and dry even if he runs around! Just re-apply every time you clean him. Good weather for it at least

and you can use the same pot or cup of eggwhite, a few times,, if you don't double-dip. (or even if you do)

FanjolinaJolie · 17/05/2010 20:01

Fresh air as much as you can and only clean with cotton wool and water.

Could you leave him without a nappy for most of the day except for sleep time? Yes, you'll have to clean up after him but it is the fastest and best way to heal it. Within two days it will be dramatically improved.

You could try a waterproof picnic rug or similar and set up toys on it inside.

Hope it is better soon.

5inthebed · 17/05/2010 20:39

Today he has been nappyless for most of it, and egged within an inch of his life. His bum is looke marinally better, and I've been on my hands and knees cleanin up little wee spots . Luckily he only poos when he is in his cot so didn't have any little poo piles to clean up

Metanium, you can get it from most supermarkets, excellent stuff. Hope he feels better soon xx

sammysamsam · 17/05/2010 22:53

i've always used 'timodene'- yellow, sticks like nowt.. helps a lot. ...gp prescribed. wonder if its the smae ingredient as metanium..never heard of that one till now.. and the egg white info is fab. learn sommat new everyday

ConDemNation · 18/05/2010 07:15

Oh well done! It does take a little while to heal completely but it allows the wound to granulate, under the top layer of protection, and you can see it happening...really interesting! The edges get a sort of look to them, like the skin is starting to rebuild.

Hope it continues to work...I know metanium is good, but it is powerful stuff and quite chemically and I think the egg white hurts far less from what I can tell. And it doesn't make your hands, floor, clothes etc so sticky!!

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 07:31

Btw Sudocreme contains lanolin which can be an irritant, lots of people are allergic to it.

Metamium would have been my recommendation.
