Worried about my little boy

I am a bit worried about my little boy (15 months).

Since he was tiny he has always been prone randomly being sick. I talked to the HV ages ago about and she said that some babies are prone to this and he would grow out of it in time.

Over the last week though I have noticed that it is happening more frequently - for the last 5 days he has been sick at some point everyday (during or after food).

It never bothers him at all (he will go straight back to what he is eating!) He has always put on weight well (haven't had him wighed for a while though) and otherwise seems happy and contented. He does sleep a lot, but always has loved his naps and he is lively and alert inbetween.

I just keep worrying that it is a sign of something more serious.

I am an absolute panicker anyway as anyone in my family would confirm, but obviously when it goes to my little angel I am absolutely neurotic.

I am taking him to the doctors tomorrow but just can't relax for worrying that there is something serious causing this

Has anyone else experienced this and could this just be an allergy?

Tell me more about the pattern and type of vomit...

gettingabitnervousnow · 16/05/2010 19:46

There doesn't really seem to be a pattern.

Wednesday he was sick after his breakfast, Thursday in the car after breakfast, Friday after his tea, Saturday after his tea and today a little bit in the car whilst eating rice cakes.

Quite often he coughs/burps/hiccups and that seems to make him sick....

Sorry, he generally just brings up whatever he has eaten, sometimes a fair amount, often just a little bit

Is he perhaps just eating a little bit too fast? Or eating a bit too much?

my DS loves formula and will drink as much as he can get his little mits on.. But, anything more than a bottle during the day, and he'll bring the whole lot back up.
(or at least some of it)...

Has this been since birth? Is he bf/ff? Does he eat cheese/weetabix? (my ds found these a bit rich and would be sick, caused by reflux and then a milk intolerance).

I would keep a food diary, including times, and a vomit diary, including as much detail as possible and take it to the GP after four/five days. My oldest ds (3/4 dcs have had reflux) would vomit a bit when he laughed, whenever he had dairy, never bothered by it and gained weight. We switched to soya milk and it stopped after food. He now NEVER eats cheese which is a pain in the arse and was probably intolerant for a lot less time than we catered for! The other two had reflux but were very uncomfortable as babies.

Also may be worth considering a weak flap/reflux that lets vomit up a bit easier than in others. Two/four dcs are sick when they laugh too much, they are 8 and 3.

Have you thought of allergy testing? Or does he have some sort of reflux thing going on? Or is it some sort of car sickness or motion sickness?

Harimo - he absolutely loves his food and quite probably does eat too much for his age. My fault as I'm not good at knowing portion sizes for his age and have tended to think that as long as it is healthy it doesn't matter how much he eats. DP definately thinks he eats too much.

He is exactly the same as your DS re milk - to the point where I have chamged his teats back to newborn ones and sometimes give it to him in two lots to make him have a break in the middle - otherwise he will just gulp it down in one go and then throw it all up!

Posieparker - he has has always been like this on and off, but it seems to have got worse/more frequent just recently.

He was b/f until about 8 months and is now on cows milk. Interesting what you said about weetabix and cheese as he eats a lot of both. He definately seems to vomit more easier than most so quite possibly a weak flap too. I wasn't sure if he could still get reflux at his age. Will definately start keeping a diary though and see if there is a pattern.

mathananxiety - would the doctor be able to do the allergy testing or would I have to take him to a nutritionist? My mum suggested it may be some sort of motion sickness too.

I will keep the diary for a few days and then take him to get him checked out.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. I am quite relieved that you all seem to think it is likely to be something quite innocent rather than something serious. I do have the tendancy to imagine the worse!

An allergist would be the one to test for allergies -- usually done with a skin-prick test for adults or older children, but I don't know how they would do it for a toddler.

It might be an inner ear or eye problem (related to balance or perception of being dizzy or things being out of focus) -- this is thought to be behind some cases of motion sickness. Maybe a long shot?
