DD! had it two weeks ago and all my friends' children are currently suffering or recovering. The GP I saw who confirmed DD's case said that the baby (DD") would get her immunity from me as I am bfing. But today she broke out in little blisters. Do I need to see the GP and what can I do to help the poor wee thing?

GP is obviously wrong!

My DD2 had the pox at about 5 months. Unfortunately I have read that passive immunity (i.e. passed on from the mother) lasts 3 months at the outside, which is why some of these littlies get it. BF may help reduce the effect but my DD2 had it much worse than DD1 which apparently has something to do with her being exposed every day for the infection period.

If you're sure it's chickenpox I am not sure I would bother seeing the doctor. If she is old enough for Calpol (which I think 3 months is) then give her that if she seems miserable/gets a fever. Great Ormond Street recommend putting a handful of bicarb in the bath to soothe the itching. Oats in the bath (I put them in a pair of tights) and apparently Aveeno bath oil can also help.

If she seems very itchy you might want to see if the GP will prescribe, say, a mild antihistimine.

Calomine cream is better than calomine lotion IME.

I found that the spots in DD2's nappy were particularly nasty and took an age to heal, so lots of nappy-free time is a good idea I think.

HTH and that she is better soon.

DD3 had it at 15 weeks. She was covered!Dissolve a little bread soda in a bath and bathe her as normal. After she's dry put some Eurax cream on each 'pock'.If you do this daily,it'll stop the itching and redness in a couple of days.And...no scars.

Have Eurax....off to buy oats! Thanks for the help.

please speak to your gp, obviously you can't go to surgery. Little ones are more likely to develop complications so you need to know what to look for.
