Ds (7), woke this morning absolutly fine. Ate his breakfast and within half an hour was complaining of feeling sick. Half hour after that he was sick twice.

He lay on the sofa quietly til around 11 when he started complaining of a bad stomach. Then at about 12 he was violently sick again. After that he perked up and asked to have a dvd on, but about 45 min in he asked to turn it off because he had a headache and he then fell asleep.

He slept for about an hour and then woke up crying because his head hurt and then saying that the light was hurting his eyes. I checked him all over for a rash and there was nothing. Then he said his neck and back hurt. I started to panic and rang the gp for an emergency appointment. They said they couldn't see him until half 4 so I tok him to a&e.

We waited about 45 min to be seen and ds was crying and holding his head al of that time. Got taken through and a nurse have him calpol and he then vomitted everywhere.
After that he made a miraculous recovery, and by the time the doc saw him he was absolutly fine.

The doctor and nurses were lovely but did slightly make me feel like I had over reacted. The doctor said, 'if he'd had true neck stifness he'd not have been able to move it at all'. Well non of the websites say that, they all just say get them to put hin to chest, which i did and he said it hurt.

Anyway, I am still glad i took him, as if i'd waited the extra 2 hours to be seen by the gp and it had been something more than a viral infection, the 2 hours would have made all of the difference.

Just interested to know what others would have done.

Meant to add that he also had neck and back pain.

I would have taken him too. I'd rather be put down as over-anxious than the alternative. Hope he feels better soon.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 13/05/2010 18:38

i don't think you did anything wrong. I normally phone NHS direct though.

MaureenMLove · 13/05/2010 18:39

I'd have taken him too.

Don't worry about what you think they thought. As you say, it could have been very different.

Thankfully it wasn't though. Hope he's 100% soon.

You absolutely did the right thing. I am an intensive care nurse and have seen my share of meningitis kids......do not think twice about this, you did the right thing.

TotalChaos · 13/05/2010 18:40

I'ld have taken him I would have been v. worried by light/head hurting him so much.

MrsMorgan · 13/05/2010 18:40

I was going to Jamie. I did their thing on the website and it said ask for a call back, but by that point ds was really distressed and the call back could have been 20 min or more.

I just kept thinking that if it was anything sinister the quicker someone saw him the better.

You did the right thing!

I would never hesitate to seek medical advice with those symptoms.

MrsMorgan · 13/05/2010 18:41

Thank you, my mate who is a nurse has just dropped dd1 home and said she would have done exactly the same too and for me to take him right back again if he was bad again later.

You did the right thing.

You do not have to have all the symptoms of meningitis for it to be meningitis.

A local boy of 9 died of meningitis because the doctor sent him away saying it couldn't be as he could move his neck.

MrsRhettButler · 13/05/2010 18:43

definitely did the right thing... the rash is usually the last thing to happen with meningitis so you do not want it to get that far!

the docs were wrong to make you feel like that! always the way that a miracle happens at the hospital isn't it

glad hes ok now

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 13/05/2010 18:43

Never ever worry what someone will say/think when it is your child's health and well being at stake.

MrsMorgan · 13/05/2010 19:07

God fab that is awful

My children do have a habit of making miraculous recoveries in a&e, but then dd2 once did the exact same thing and then half an hour later was more or less unconcious with pneumonia, and I was so glad i'd stayed put and not taken her hom when she was zooming round a&e on a sit and ride bus lol.

I think sometimes you just know that you are right to get seen don't you.

Sounds like a terrible migraine, poor boy but you were very right to get him to a & e. Would have done so too. x

sanfairyann · 13/05/2010 22:55

gosh I wouldn't even have thought meningitis, would just have thought migraine. duh to me for completely forgetting symptoms. it's classic child behaviour for them to pick up just before seeing the doctor - been there done that. mine sometimes even claim to be fine and then the gp finds appalling ear infection raging so I think they must just try hard to look happy in case they get an injection or something. glad he's a lot better now

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 13/05/2010 23:02

I would have done the same thing.
