was prescribed it for my 9 month old ds but he's been sleeping even worse than usual since taking it and still wheezing and coughing?

Has anyone else got anything to report on it?

thanks!

It was given to one of my sons a while back. It didn't help him at all sadly.

suiledonne · 12/05/2010 12:46

My just turned 4 year old has been taking it for 6 months and has had a major improvement since being on it.

We have been able to reduce her preventer steroid to one puff a day.

On the negative side she can be quite irritable and the doctor said that is a side effect of it and in some children it gets so bad they have to be taken off the medication.

HTH

Maybe the success with it depends on the type of asthma.

DD1's asthma is always triggered by a cold/chest infection.

She has never had an attack without being ill first.

weblette · 12/05/2010 12:53

Similar situation to suiledonne with ds2. It's worked for him but he's virus-triggered too.

Haven't seen any side-effects and the severity of his attacks has gone down since he's been on it.

I had it when it first came out (as an adult). It was the only thing that helped. I used to be hospitalised at least twice a year with my asthma, but that put a stop to that.

BubsMaw · 12/05/2010 13:47

DD (4.3 yo) has been on it for 2yrs now, like others her asthma was usually virus triggered, she also has this med to help control her allergies (multiple allergies to food and environmental pollens etc). Previously she was hospitalised 5 times in a year with wheezing, now no bad wheezing for 18 months and we seldom use blue inhaler (though she may now just be outgrowing the viral wheezes). At recent review we were advised to keep her on it as this is a bad time of year to withdraw a med like this (hayfever season). Interested to read Suiledonne's irritability comment, my DD is sometimes irritable, I'd put it down to normal kid behaviour, now I'm wondering...

I found it's really important to get the full dose into the child every day, this was easier for us when DD started taking tablets rather than powder, as she wasn't reliable at eating the spoonful of puree or whatever we'd put the powder in. I think this may be why she carried on wheezing often for the first 6 months or so after starting Singulair. She doesn't mind taking the tablets, despite resisting all other medication, I'm not sure if 9 months may be too young for tabs tho (they're sweet and dissolve in mouth).

Dd1(4 - asthma usually triggered by viruses) was on it for a while, her night time cough slightly improved, but she had horrendous nightmares whilst she was on it, and as a consequence she wasn't getting much sleep (neither were we). In the end the doctor took her off it.

naturopath · 13/05/2010 20:34

hmm, still undecided about whether it is having any adverse effect. Can't see any improvement with the wheezing or coughing yet either.

DD(3) has been on it for the last four weeks.

Her asthma is linked to allergies but generally triggered by viruses & infections.

She is just now coming to the end of the first infection since August that has not rrequired an ambulance or an early morning trip to A&E.

As above, she has had some nightmares and her behaviour has changed slightly. I had a google before starting her on it, and the reports are very varied tbh.

Maybe it's the combination of meds that isn't working?

oopsandbabycoconut · 13/05/2010 20:47

We were told it either works or it doesn't - It didn't work for me at all so they stopped it as there is no point in carrying on as if it hasn't worked in 8 weeks it never will.
