Cold in 4 week old dd

My poor little dd2 has a rotten cold, caught from big sister. She is sniffly, congested and not very hungry - breastfed. What can I do to help her feel better? Have left a message for the health visitor.

The chemist sells nose saline solution which is fine for new babies. Put a couple of drops up each nostril before feeding to help clear out her nose so she can breathe easier and therefore feed easier. I used it with my DD when tiny and it really helped her.

Not much fun for the little one, I hope all is better soon.

Agree saline stuff brilliant, Calpol do one with a squirter you stick up their nose. Not very pleasant but certainly does the trick and enables them to feed better. DS2 used to get himself into a state trying to feed but not being able to breathe.

Horrible isn't it. A nasal aspirator is great when you get the hang of it. Again, not much fun but use it a few minutes after the saline spray (block one nostril and aspirate the other) and it can get a surprising amount of snot out! Gross but weirdly satisfying . Also, take her in the bathroom while you have a shower, the steam will help her breathing too.

I 2nd a nasal aspirator - I get dp to the gross bit!!

Also, try breast feeding her with her upright IYSWIM. You may need to stand but it may help her to feed if her nose is clearer.

We find that putting a bowl of hot water with a few drops of Obas oil in works a treat - Put it in the room so that it gets into the air.
