DS who is 4.5 has a swelling just below/behind his ear. He is complaining it is sore to touch and hurts when he swallows.

Cant see any reason for the swelling - no bite head or anything.

Would you go to the GP or just leave it?
He isnt ill with it but i dont like things that swell!

i don't know what to say? Could be the start of something viral. he may have been bitten and you can't see where?

racmac · 11/05/2010 08:09

doesnt look like a bite.
I dont know whether to bother GP or not. DS every so often complains it hurts

Could be mump, could be cellulitis, could be a number of things so yes, GP please

oopsandbabycoconut · 11/05/2010 08:20

I would head for the GP. One of the LOs I used to look after had a lump like this and it was an infected gland and she needed anti-Bs to clear it up.

Hope he is okay.

racmac · 11/05/2010 08:22

ok thank you - will get him checked - hate feeling like im wasting GP time

GP said could be start of infection - his tonsils are very large but not sure if thats normal for him or not.

If still the same next week then take him back - both sides are swollen although the one side i was concerned about has gone down a bit.

So dont think anything to worry about - thanks everyone

Mumps start behind the ears. Is he vaccinated against mumps?

racmac · 11/05/2010 16:58

Yes he had mmr - does that mean he wont get it at all or just that he can still get it but the effect is reduced?
GP didnt mention mumps - more thought maybe throat infection

I think you cannot get mumps if vaccinated.
Many boys with mumps also get swollen testicles.
I hope he gets better. If something bothers you just go to GP or main hospital as two opinions are better.

activate · 11/05/2010 17:18

the hospital is not a place to go if something bothers you - it's for accidents or emergencies

and yes you can get mumps even if vaccinated - no vaccine is 100% effective - mumps in a child is fine, if painful and gives lifelong immunity (unlike vaccinations unfortunately)

Octavia09 · 11/05/2010 17:59

Activate, I would go to a hospital if the health of my child was bothering me a lot but probably in the evening when GPS are at home. Otherwise, I would go to a GP.

activate · 11/05/2010 20:37

over an inflamed gland?

Octavia Are you serious?? Taking a young child who is well in themselves to A&E with a swollen gland. In the evening!!

Have you never heard of the out of hours service your GP provides.??

Octavia09 · 12/05/2010 11:41

Well, may be you did not understand my message but I meant if the condition worsens and you are worried a lot and the GPs are not available etc. Have a nice day.
