Adult tooth coming in behind milk teeth?!

InmyheadIminParis · 10/05/2010 17:36

DD's just said she's got a new tooth growing - and yes, she has, but it's behind her milk tooth

Her milk tooth is a tiny bit wobbly, but not much more than her other teeth. Has anyone elses DC experienced this?

Does the milk tooth have to be extracted by a dentist, or will it eventually drop out? Any advice?

That happened to one of DS's teeth. The baby tooth came out fine on its own. The adult tooth looked a little wonky at first but is growing in fine now.

Yes, my dd1 has had this recently, it looked awful for a few weeks and I asked the dentist who said she would have to remove them if they didn't fall out on their own.

My dd1 rather obligingly fell over in the snow knocking both baby teeth out. That was a couple of months ago (in the snow) and her adult teeth have now come down quite nicely but still a bit of a middle gap.

My dd had a double row for a while - it looked very odd indeed. The dentist said it was uncommon but normal, but to be particularly careful about cleaning between them.

A number of my milk teeth had to be extracted because they were still very much firmly in place when the adult teeth were jostling for room. On the plus side, because practically all of my molars had to be pulled, and some of the other ones (yes, very firmly in place!), I did learn to have no fear of the dentist or injections...

Not sure IIRC, but I think the term is 'impacted'

I work for a dentist and have been told to tell people who call about this that it can be normal, and just to call back again if the baby teeth don't fall out soon.

i noticed dd on a flight, was well shocked. called my dentist and she said was totally normal, the tooth in front hasn't fallen out yet tho and i first spotted it 6 months ago.
i had a set of 4 behind my front teeth upper pallet, they didn't have room to come thru as dentist said our jaws are getting smaller.

DS1 is 7 and has exactly the same. His first adult tooth came through this way, and was fully grown before the milk tooth fell out. The same is happening now with a second one.

Our dentist said it was normal, and that they will come forward into the gap in time.

Sorry not to get back to this thread sooner - I was overcome with election madness yesterday .

Thank you, thank you all for your wise words. I will now try to stop worrying and hope that her baby tooth will start wobbling soon, or that we'll have a miracle snowfall and she'll obligingly fall over a la belgo's dd!

By the way, is this the first thread in MN history where everyone has offered the same advice? Is no-one going to tell me to grab a chisel and hammer and knock it out myself?
