4yr old saying all front teeth hurt? - help

I am at a bit of a loss here. I have booked a dentist appt for monday morning but she is refusing to eat. Its not like its a molar on one side or something which would make more sense. It seems to be all of them, incl fronts!

She has just recovered from a high temp and sore ear last weekend so is a bit run down but has been eating fine the last few days.

I can't see anything like ulcers or anything in her mouth. Her sister had suspected hand foot and mouth last weekend but a) she has already had it b) absolutely no sign of anything at all

Anyone? She is going to be starving by end of today...

Try painkillers. Give her soft food, plenty of fluids. You could try a doctors appointment if you can get one today.

I would suspect a virus infection of some kind.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 07/05/2010 13:09

She could have blocked sinuses, this can feel like tooth pain as they are in a similar region. Would she try some soup?

coffeeinbed · 07/05/2010 13:11

Grinding?

jasperc163 · 07/05/2010 13:12

Thanks mummytime. I tried Calpol this morning but didnt help the eating. GP saw her on tues (at end of ear thing) and said mildly pink ear and throat. I have always wondered in past if she confuses where pain is coming from in her mouth, but she seems quite specific and is ok until you ask her to eat.

She was keen to have lunch but then started crying as soon as she put something in her mouth - it doesnt seem to matter if its hard or soft,. Odd thing is DD2 aged 1 refused solids for 3 days last weekend (major as she is a human dustbin!). So it seems a bit of a coincidence, but we then put DD2's problem down to hand foot and mouth as she got some spots on hands and feet (though we never saw anything in mouth.)

But you are right, maybe she is about to come down with something else and she is just expressing it as teeth?

thanks

she does have a blocked nose - though not that bad. thanks will look into it - would it feel like front teeth though?

coffee in bed - do you mean grinding at night? i know she used to do this when younger though i am not aware of it now. Would this cause widespread sensitivity?

Hi, maybe she has the start of hand, foot and mouth again? My DS aged 4 is currently suffering for the Third time!! How unlucky is he? and this time is the worst - he's been terrible with ulcers in his mouth, tongue and back of throat.. After googling it looks like they can get HF&M several times!!!

coffeeinbed · 07/05/2010 18:26

It would, it;s the pressure.

jasperc163 · 07/05/2010 19:34

Yes will check her mouth in the morning again re hand foot and mouth. But no sign so far.

She has now decided she can eat on one side so did have tea :-) . Will ask the dentist about signs of grinding - thaks coffeinbed.

I used to get gum infections when I got tonsillitis as a child, behind my front teeth used to get really sore but for some odd reason I didnt tell anyone.

jasperc163 · 07/05/2010 19:45

thats interesting ohyoubadbadkitten. DD1 has mentioned teeth before (but in a much more mild way) and it always ties in with a ear or throat problem, so i assumed it was her not being clear about the location of the pain (especially when she was younger). Once she is better she seems to be fine about her teeth too. She has had a sore throat and ear problem in last week.

Wouldnt you be able to see a gum infection though? i can see no sign of inflamation - will try to look behind her front teeth tomorrow.

Its mad - both DDs were fit as a fiddle all winter and we have had one illness after another since easter. Its a vicious circle as I suppose they are both getting run down.

i get really bad tooth pain when i am coming down with a cold, esp the front teeth. if i bend down it feels like all the blood rushes into them and they feel really heavy, it is horrible.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2010 19:52

I don't think from the front you could have seen it, was literally at the back of my top front teeth - was enough to make eating really sore. it used to swell and I felt like I wanted to pop it. what a daft child I was for not telling anyone!

gordonpym · 08/05/2010 11:20

I would say sinusitis.
I had this this winter, after a cold and a running nose which was not even so bad. It's mucus trapped that becomes infected.
My whole mouth was in pain.
Try to push gently with your finger her face to see if she feels pain. If she does, she might need antibiotics

gorionine · 08/05/2010 11:25

"I would say sinusitis."
I said that to a friend once (was asking her about headach in 6yo son at the time) and she laughed at me saying "children do not have sinuses until they are about 12yo!" Can anyone confirm that "fact"?

gordonpym · 08/05/2010 13:35

Sorry, but your friend is wrong.
www.kidsgrowth.com/resources/articledetail.cfm?id=110 this is just one link if you google sinusitis + children. Even babies can have it.

jasperc163 · 08/05/2010 18:57

thanks all - will try the face poking in the morning! It gets stranger and stranger - today it is teeth on one side mostly and tongue! But nothing to be seen on tongue.
Her breath if fairly stinky which would back up the sinusitus?

I assume dentist is trained to check for this as there must be people with it who assume they have a tooth problem?

gorionine · 09/05/2010 12:22

Thanks gordonpym! I was always a bit about that information.

gordonpym · 09/05/2010 15:05

....but the tongue? It may not be sinusitis after al. Good that you see a dentist on Monday, good luck and let us know!

jasperc163 · 10/05/2010 15:26

thanks everyone.
Well good news is it isnt her teeth - she isnt the type to have a filling done without major trauma! Dentist said her palate behind front teeth looks red and soft so that may have been the problem. Maybe caused by hot food - but i can't think when or how as she insists everything is pretty much cold! Or maybe its something to do with the fact she has been ill - i just don't know. Anyway I am hoping it will get better over the next few days.
